Bought one, gave away, bought another
There's not much to this unit, and that's what's nice. It's a filter and container. No status indicators, meters, LEDs... No rubber washers to fall out or need replacing, no special flipping lids or stylish, impractical proportions.Fill the top with water. It can take some time to drain/filter to the bottom (which is good). Fill it again so as you use up the bottom, it fills again without having to refill. When it's time to clean it, remove the filter and clean the top and bottom separately -- plenty of space for your hands in both. We rarely need to clean ours and it's never gotten discolored. It takes up very little "floor space" in your fridge, yet has never been too tall for the 6-7 fridges we've stored it in. Had one of these about 4 years and seem to replace the filter about annually (you can tell when it starts draining fast and you might see some residue depending on what isn't being filtered out of your water). Filter just lifts out, new one drops in -- 10 seconds. And of course the big question, yes, it does make a difference in the taste of water. We've lived in places with overly soft and hard water, and in all cases, this improves it. Water immediately has less of or no smell after filtering. More noticeable is that it removes residue. For example, in several places we lived, you could see white residue left in pots used for boiling -- but if we poured from this into the pots, no residue.Only gripe: between two people, we have to refill it daily and this can take a few minutes if you fill it, wait for it to drain, and load up the top again. Filling can also be inconvenient since having any dishes in the sink means you can't fit it under the faucet.I would strongly recommend this -- cost savings over bottled water are enormous, it makes water taste better and leave less debris behind, and even just as a pitcher it's simple, sturdy, holds a good amount for 2-3 people, and doesn't take up too much space for its volume.

Years later, and with daily use, it is standing the test of time.
I've had this pitcher for about three years now and it is still in great shape. Apart from washing and changing the filter every couple months I have had to do nothing else to keep it looking and acting as new. There are four parts to this pitcher, if counting the filter, and it is extremely easy to "dismantle" for washing (I have washed mine by hand and in the dishwasher). The main part is the pitcher itself (the clear piece) which has within it a removable white plastic insert (reservoir) that the filter fits nicely into. When filling the reservoir insert I find that for the most part it holds enough water for my daily needs. With a fresh filter the water flows through pretty quickly so at times I wait a minute (until the full reservoir is now half empty) and fill back up with water. After doing that the pitcher is at capacity with water. After accounting for the filter the lid would be the final part of the pitcher. It fits perfectly into the pitcher and I find that it is easy to clean. The only time I feel that I need to hold my hand on it to keep it from coming off the pitcher is when I am pouring at an extreme upside down angle trying to get out the last drop of water, and even when I do use my hand it is only as a precaution.I have had another Brita pitcher, which was round and held a little more water but I prefer this one bra sue I never feel I need to struggle and reorganize my fridge to fit it on the shelf. I feel the more oblong shape makes it more efficient space wise and I never wish it held more water. I use it daily and have loved it from day one, never regretting my purchase for an instant.

Finally on the 3rd try
The package was damaged upon arrival. Maybe a larger box and more baffling surrounding the Brita filter pitcher box would have helped, but I see the main problem as being the manufacturer's original packaging of the pitcher itself. It has no protection, just loose in a thin cardboard box. This thing is made of brittle plastic with very vulnerable prominent edges and points on it. I don't understand why the manufacturer doesn't just make the box half an inch wider and include form fitting styrofoam panels on each side to prevent this, as this has got to be happening all the time. I don't see how it can't. I have returned 2 of these for the same reason, finally got the 3rd today, and it is finally a lucky undamaged one. FedEx must have had it riding with a shipment of pillows. :-). I can tell by a couple small scuffs on the inside though, that the folks who are working the production line to put these together are being pretty rough on them. Maybe a little QC would benefit the company there. Also consider a cover over the spout.I am using a piece of aluminum foil to cover the small spout though, as there is no cover on it and I prefer not to drink dust or bugs as long as I'm going to the trouble of filtering my water.I tried this one out and the water tastes great. I couldn't drink the tap water at this house before today. To those of you who complain of carbon particles, be sure to follow the instructions on initial use of the filters. Mine is filtering the filled white top portion within a minute or 2 at the most. I'm relatively happy with it ....Finally!!
