This cable was purchased to connect my VGA from the back of my desktop to the HDMI on the back of my monitor. It didn't work..

No this is a cable that goes from an HDMI computer port to a VGA monitor port.

It should, that's what I use them for at the office. Our new gen laptops to old Dell monitors some of which we've been using for 15 years!
