The Advanced Personal Filter Straw is designed with multiple stages to remove any iodine before it reaches the user. Iodinated Resin (which is EPA approved) is used to KILL the Bacteria found in contaminated water, not just filter bacteria like other filter straws, by allowing the water to flow through the iodinated resin which kills the bacteria. The next stage of the filter removes the iodine from the water which makes it safe for human consumption. This same filter will remove excessive amounts of iodine should it be present in the water supply naturally.

If the water you are drinking from is Turbid and Stagnant then you should expect the filter to last about 25 gallons or more. But keep in mind, water can look crystal clear like a mountain stream, but can still kill you from impurities in that water. However, clear water doesn't clog up the straw as quickly as dirty water can. So in this environment the Advanced Personal Filter Straw will work effectively to purify your water for 200 or more gallons of clear water. Other companies only provide the life based on clear water which is a bit misleading because that isn't typically the type of water you will find in an emergency. The Advanced Filter Straw life is determined by the type of water and how often you back-flush the straw. As long as you can draw water through the straw, the straw is effectively still protecting you from harmful contaminates.
