A great read!
Sometimes the best books are the ones that sneak up on you. The Wedding People starts with Phoebe in one of the darkest places a person can be, but Alison Espach has crafted something unexpectedly beautiful from that premise—a story that's equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious. What makes this novel special is how it uses the compressed timeframe of a single week to create genuine intimacy with its characters. We're essentially trapped at a resort wedding with Phoebe, watching her reluctantly get pulled into the chaos of other people's lives. Enter Lila, the bride who becomes an unlikely lifeline. Their relationship develops with such natural progression that you barely notice Phoebe transforming from someone ready to give up on everything to someone willing to engage with the messy, complicated business of being human again.Espach has a gift for ensemble storytelling—each wedding guest feels fully realized rather than just comic relief or plot device. They orbit around Phoebe's story in ways that feel organic, each contributing to her slow journey back to herself. The humor throughout never feels manufactured or desperate for laughs. Instead, it emerges naturally from the absurdity of wedding culture and the way people behave when they're thrown together in high-stress, high-emotion situations.By the time the wedding ends, you realize you've witnessed something quite remarkable: a story about suicidal ideation that manages to be genuinely funny and ultimately hopeful without ever minimizing the weight of mental health struggles. It's a delicate balance that Espach pulls off beautifully. The Wedding People proves that sometimes the most profound healing happens in the most unlikely places—like being accidentally adopted by someone else's wedding party.

A terrific book!
What an absolutely delightful book this was! Guys believe all the rave reviews you are seeing on the internet and just read this book! The Wedding People by Alison Espach starts off with Phoebe arriving at a mansion-like hotel in Newport, Rhodes Island a couple of years after her divorce. The mundanity of her life, her loneliness and the recent loss of her cat brings her to Cornwall Inn where unbeknownst to her, a huge wedding is taking place. The wedding people are fascinating to her— the bride who is welcoming the guests with food stuck to her teeth, the bridesmaids who are talking about their uneventful flights, the multiple Jims in the family, and even the bride's mother who's constantly day-drinking. But Phoebe is not here to be one of the wedding people. She's here to die. And when Lila the perfectionist bride gets to know her plans, she's devastated knowing her perfect wedding is going to be ruined. The wedding runs for 6 days, and as these 6 days pass by, Phoebe and Lila form a weird little friendship. Even though Lila is not the protagonist of the book, we see Lila's growth as well. A sheltered girl who needs everything perfect and planned in her life, who can't stand up for herself against her snobbish sisyer-in-law, finds herself venting about her life to Phoebe. And Phoebe imbibes some of Lila's way of living. This unconventional friendship grows in these 6 days in a beautiful way.As the story progresses we get to meet the other wedding people and get to know them a little better. This book is so raw, so emotional, so very authentic. It guts out Phoebe's inner world, the way it shaped her passive existence and transforms her into a woman who finally starts thinking about herself. Her struggles with fertility and depression were so beautifully portrayed. On the other side of the spectrum we have Lila, who lives her life like it's the last day on earth, a little impulsive and immature yet strong-willed.It's also a love story. But I loved how the book's main focus was on these two women and their growth. So in love with this book!

Start to finish : 5 star to 1 star
Started with amazing plot and promising pace but soon dwindled into a boring story which I kept reading in the pursuit of something happening on next page but it never did.The quirkiness and crispness of book nosedived like a free falling object and ended with a thud without a noise.
