Not what I expected
The DJI Flip Mini is my first foray into the whole drone thing. I was looking for something that was supposed to be for a beginner, but one you could grow with. I have never flown anything but a kite. I am, however, a photographer and I wanted something that would take decent pix and videos...although I am not a videographer. OK..at the time I got this drone...it was a little bit hard to find. I had to buy the drone and controller and one battery then piece-mill the rest of it...batteries, case, fast charger...basically the "fly more" set-up. When it all got to me I was worried that I was going to take it up...crash it and have a $400...very light paper weight. So I took it step by step. You Tubed everything I could...really took my time and took it step by step. Came time to get it in the air...hooked up my phone to the controller, connected and in about twenty minutes I was flying my Flip around the back yard. By the end of the day, I was taking some nice pix and even some video. I took an hour or so every afternoon to practice and while I am not pro...I am fairly comfortable using it. The photo and video quality are outstanding. As long as you don't just hammer down right from the jump it is super easy to fly. The battery life is great. Under good conditions I can get a solid 23-25 minutes per battery...and that is listening to the drone. If you intentionally fly it until it drops? Not 31 minutes, but waaay closer than you'd think. Have a crashed it...yep. Full frontal collision with my brick chimney...limbs to parking lot maybe 25 feet. Electrical lines...UGLY. This little aircraft is still going. Nothing broken...not even a big scratch. What is amazing is that I have also crashed it into things and had it catch itself before it hit the ground. I said "things"...plural. OH...the wind? I don't know what "level 4 or 5" means, but I can tell you this. In the wind, if it gets stiff...this little drone will just about stand on its head to keep that camera level. All of this may seem like elementary stuff to some of you with experience, but I am ASTOUNDED. I got into all of this...drone, 4 batteries, case, extra props, a polarizing filter, fast charger and a128g micro SD card for less $800. I call that a value for dollar...I am not even all that good at using it yet and I feel like I have already gotten my money's worth. You can get the "fly more" kit for less than that. Here is something else...I can carry the drone, controller and phone plus batteries...in my cargo pants. Totes EZ and I draw ZERO attention. Look...I was born in the 60's. I am not a super geek computer guy or a young person born immersed in this stuff and I can use it right now and I will get nothing but better by next Summer for my desert trip. I've had it a couple months. So...pretty simple, pretty small, EZ to get up and running and use and...dare I say? Damn tough. If you are sticking your toe in the drone pond? Come on with it. The DJI Flip is a home run... Go easy on my video...it was at night...that was what I was trying to show... ***I do want to add something...it is now nearly Christmas and I have really been trying to learn better techniques and such. Yesterday while flying up and down my very slanted driveway I experience and really rough crash. The drone got stuck on a very small limb and when it tried to returned it went berserk. I understand exactly why it happened and it is no fault of the drone or software. One of the rotors were damaged and the drone interpreted that as an out of control crash scenario and was trying to save it self...twice...I didn't notice the damage at first and took off again with the damaged rotor...madness again and a worse crash at full speed into my house. The first one was bad...into my retaining wall...but number two was awful. I was sure it was !@%$ up. So...I found the issue, replaced the rotor (not hard btw), and went out to see if my mini drone would still....you know...drone. Happy to report that the drone is fine...nothing else broken and all was well. All this to say...this is a tough little moto-scooter and one doesn't have to be a pro to replace the rotors. Just be aware...if your drone gets caught on a twig or a wire etc...it might seemingly go bananas. It is doing what it was programed to do which is protect itself and you...so pay attention.
