How does this rubber cover work?

It replaces the OEM cover over the latch button plate. Easy to install. The hardest part was getting the old cover off. We had to essentially scrape it off as it had deteriorated and had become a sticky, old “gum under the desk” consistency.

How do i know if i need this or a replacement for the whole mechanism?

My cover has deteriorated and “melted” so much it prevented the switch from working. If you remove the cover / switch (2 screws but you’ll need a low profile Phillips) then you can pull the whole thing out and test the switch without the cover blocking it’s ability to be depressed.
