Yes this battery monitor will show you what battery percentage and remaining AHs you have left however, some batteries advertise 100ah but may be a little under that. You will have to set the amp hours on the monitor and then you will have to manually calibrate the monitor by fully charging the battery and setting the monitor to 100% (by holding the up arrow) or fully discharging the battery and setting the monitor to 0% (by holding the down arrow. This device will also tell you how long the battery will take to fully discharge or fully charge based on current charge/discharge rates.

I very briefly shorted positive to the non-battery side of the shunt. No display now on the monitor. Did I fry the shunt or the monitor?

Maybe the copper foil of the shunt circuit is blown, and the monitor is generally not broken. please send me a photo of the shunt circuit board,so that we can help you fix it.

Does the meter automatically reset at 100% charge, or does the user have to tell it when the battery is fully charged (which defeats the purpose!)?

I’m finding that the meter accurately shows battery depletion when you are off grid for a couple of days, but not it’s capacity when recharging. I often reset it to 100% when I know it’s completely recharged. So, yeah, not a very useful tool! If you recharge with solar panel, it’s completely useless.
