Q: Can this 2-bay enclosure be used with only 1 hdd? i'm thinking about buying this and one drive now and one later when needed. don't need raid!

Yes, just set it up in single mode. Each disk will show up as an independent drive. If you do switch it raid later you’ll need to backup and restore the data since the raid initialization will wipe the drive.

Q: If 4 drives mounted as jbod, does unit act as hub with 1 cable to pc but showing 4 drives (q:,r:,s:,t:) or are 4 separate cables needed?

If you build 4 hard drives as JBOD, the drives will be mounted as a single one drive with the total capacity of the 4 drives. If any hdd is failed, the data would be lost. And yes, it's always just only one cable needed to connect the device with your PC no matter what RAID modes you build. If you need 4 separate drives showing in your PC, you need to build Single mode under Windows, while under Mac, the default mode is Single, no need to use the software RAID Manager. In considering the data security, it's recommended to build RAID 5 and yes, 4 drives can build RAID 5.

Q: How do you monitor health of each raid as I notice that software is not available for this one?

You may check the HDD indicator lights which will turn into red if the hard drives have a problem.

Q: What is the procedure for replacing a failed hard drive in raid 1 configuration?

All you have to do is replace the bad hard disk drive. The RAID controller will rebuild the contents of the disk by mirroring the existing good disk drive.
