How does this spin do you if there is nothing to hold to turn?

It spins on ball bearings. You can push yourself with your arms and legs or someone else can push you to get you going.

what is the difference between dizzy disc and dizzy disc junior?

I am not an expert and I only have the regular one (not the junior). But when I ordered the regular one, the company contacted me to be sure I wanted it as opposed to the "smaller one." I take that to mean it is about how big each one is and age that it is appropriate for. I ordered the regular one for my autistic daughter who was 4 at the time. She is now 5 1/2, but is extremely tall (about height of a 7 year old) and it still works great for her. Her sister and boy cousins, who are as old as 8, also play on it and love it.
