Take a lot of powder to achieve desired results
It takes a lot to make frosting purple but it does the trick. I did not notice a taste with the purple sweet potato in the frosting. Great food dye alternative.

Sweet Potato-Powered Purple Perfection
Nutricost Purple Plant-Based Food Coloring has completely won me over. Made from purple sweet potato, this powdered dye offers a vibrant, natural option for food and drinks—without any artificial ingredients. I have found when using it in beverages that it dissolves best when mixed with a small amount of liquid first, then topped off with the remaining liquid for a smooth result. I can’t wait to try it in a Purple Velvet Cake! There’s no noticeable taste, which is a huge plus. I can control the intensity of the color just by adjusting how much I use, making it super versatile whether I want a pale lilac tint or a deep, jewel-toned purple. It’s clean, easy, and visually stunning.

Good purple color without numbered dyes
This is a good purple shade - with a bit of a learning curve if you're accustomed to FD&C liquid dyes. In my case, I tried to color a drink with it, and it became clumpy. On second try, I created a tiny slurry with it and water (or the drink of choice) to make a thin paste and THEN mixed it into the drink. Much better! There is a noticeable smell when in the tub, but the taste is minimal and not noticeable under other strong flavors or under strong sweetness, as in frosting. At about $10 for this tub, it is competitively priced with other natural dye options.

Great Alternative to Artificial Dyes for Home Baking
I'm reviewing Nutricost Purple Plant Based Food Coloring From Purple Sweet Potato Powder, Color Alternative For Food & Beverages, 75 Servings.I prefer natural coloring products, and it's nice to see some starting to arrive on the consumer market. This purple sweet potato powder does a nice job coloring frosting and baked goods. It does take quite more powder than I expected to get a dark purple color, so I needed to add a few extra drops of cream to get the correct consistency for buttercream frosting. I didn't notice any off flavors using this in vanilla frosting.I will note that the suggested serving size is 1/4 tsp, but that would only give a pale purple color, so I wouldn't count on 75 servings. This powder comes in a clear plastic tub with a white screw-on lid. The jar was shrink wrapped and the tamper-proof seal was intact. The EXP is 05/2028. See photos for label information including nutrition facts and ingredients.I find the current price of $9.50 to be on the high side of comparable products. As a side note, this Nutricost Purple Plant Based Food Coloring is packaged in the USA using globally sourced ingredients per the product label.

Natural food coloring for health conscious individuals.
Hooray for natural food coloring! This is an absolute beautiful shade of purple. I don't use chemical food dyes, and am an avid cook and baker. I'm always looking for products that will help liven up my kitchen creations. I'm excited to use this for frosting, cake & cupcakes and embarking on making my own hydration powdered drink mix for the family. This will be a beautiful addition for color and those wonderful anthocyanins!I did give it a little taste, and detected almost a vanilla like flavor. But it wasn't very strong. Perfect coloring agent! The label claims it is packaged and quality tested in the USA made with globally sourced ingredients. Manufactured for Nutri cost, a name most of us in the natural health world are familiar with.Label claims 1/4 teaspoon/1 g equals one serving. There are 75 servings in the container. I have a feeling for highly pigmented needs, you will need to use quite a bit more. That's OK, we want to try more colors now!

Great natural alternative to artificial coloring.
This purple sweet potato coloring arrived well packaged in a resealable bottle. It was safety sealed and doesn't expire for nearly 3 years. I was skeptical if using the powder would make my food taste like sweet potatoes, because I really dislike sweet potatoes. I'm happy to report that I didn't notice any sweet potato flavor in anything I made. I really didn't notice any flavor changes at all. It seems to take more of this product to get the desired color results than it would using artificial ingredients, but I think that is a reasonable trade off for keeping things all natural. It is more expensive than artificial coloring, but I think that is to be expected. I look forward to trying more natural coloring options after trying this product.

Earthy Flavor
I finally had a chance to try this natural food color out. I made cupcakes and used it to color the frosting. It is a powder and was easy to mix in to the frosting but it left it a little speckly. I had to add more than what I show in the first pic to get it as dark as I wanted but you can definitely taste an earthy flavor though not unpleasant. It mixed in smoothly and was not grainy. It works well if you are going the natural route!
