Paper Quilling Chinese Style Hardcover – October 7, 2014

This is a BEAUTIFUL Book. The pictures in this book are beautiful. I love just looking at the book. Great addition to my library.

This book is for quilling artists that are past the beginner stage. There are so many great ideas and valuable information in here, I can’t wait to read through it all. So far, I have just skimmed through the book, but I can tell I’m going to have a field day with it. One thing that I’ve already learned, that other books didn’t tell me, was how the different widths of quilling strips have different applicability. I was so intrigued, I decided to buy all the different widths to try out. The most valuable thing about this book is the inspiration that it brings to my crafting.

The photos in this book are beautiful. The book is eye candy; there are no snowflakes or silly dog faces or teddy bears. This is quilling as a mature art form; not something silly aimed at children.As soon as I looked at Amazon's "see inside" feature I was hooked on the imagery and wanted to try making some of these designs. I would not choose it as a first book for quilling if you're never tried the craft, but quilling is basically rolling strips of paper and gluing them shut and squeezing them into shape. If you can do basic shapes you should be able to follow the instructions and photos to recreate the art shown.I've had the book a little over a week now and I've made the dragonfly (6. Dragonfly Skimming the Water Surface). I didn't have enough of one color of paper to do the body and wings so I used multiple shades of red and silver, and I added some rhinestones to the eyes to give my insect a bit of pop. I haven't quilled in years so this was my first project in a very long time and it came out reasonably well.There are four chapters broken down into sections. Chapter 1 talks about the Chinese take on quilling, and Chapter 2 introduces the basics, including materials, tools, and ten basic techniques. Chapter 3 gets you started on easy projects, and Chapter 4 includes advanced lessons. There's also a short appendix of shapes at the back for easy reference.The sections include short descriptions of what the art represents. For instance, the section on the Carp talks about how the carp is an auspicious symbol and gives a little bit of background and history. The text is a little dry, but the information is interesting, and seeing how the artists draw on Chinese folk tales is giving me some ideas for drawing from other cultures as well.

This book has some inspiring designs but these are the featured sample art work (like the naked woman and fish on amazon's page) , and not one of the designs they actually give step by step instructions. In their advanced chapter which I was most interested in, there is only design I fancied (Drunk Imperial Concubine) -- the rest I found unappealing as the designs were too busy (like the front cover design), not cohesive and not elegant; color choices were too multicolored or uninspiring (though one can easily substitute with colors more appealing to one's taste). One thing that will frustrate both beginner and even more intermediate quillers, who want to rely on the book for designs they can replicate without having to think about dimensions themselves, is that this book does NOT (as compared to quilling books by american/european authors) provide enough details like the length of the paper strips too use/cut, or the size of the coils one must aim for. The instructions focus more on assembly steps of the coiled or shaped pieces of quilling paper to create the design. This is a very thrifty author -- his tool list is very short and does not even mention the use of quilling boards (which have different sized holes/shapes for quilled paper to expand). There are no design templates provided -- so one must just eyeball everything or do a lot trial and error especially with paper strip lengths, positioning of pieces, until it looks like the design in the lesson. They do not provide the final dimensions of the design, though they provide the size of the background paper used. One thing that differentiates this book from american quilling books are the use of "crescents" (the multi-strip curved shapes featured in book cover design) in the sample art works and in their advanced lessons chapter -- use of crescents is not mentioned in most american quilling books. This book also uses quilling on a wider variety of themes (including scenery) , instead of the usual flower and animal themes that most american books teach. For beginners and intermediate, this book can provide an eye-opener on many other designs you could use quilling, especially using crescents. But if its simply inspiration or awe inspiring designs (both simple and complicated) that you need, you don't need to spend on this book; just google quilling and a ton of quilled art work pops up especially on PINTEREST; some quillers give free step by step instruction to their designs. I was expecting more from this book -- so I am on the fence as to whether I should have purchased this or not.

I wouldn't recommend this as the only quilling book to have, there's not a lot of step by step instructions, but since the first half of almost every other quilling book is taken up with the same instructions, they really aren't necessary. I'm finding it inspirational and freeing, since it's a different style from the normal coils.

Love this book! The quilling designs are much more sophisticated than found in other books. The designs are spectacular and for an experienced quiller, you'll likely have no issues mimicking the designs.However, for a beginning quiller such as myself, the instructions are SEVERELY lacking. Just know that if you want to make one of the designs, you may need to learn some of the techniques used in the book from another source, or simply figure them out on your own through trial and error. Even so, I'd definitely recommend getting this book... It's aspirational for me!!

一般的なクイリングと違い線で表す事をしたい、繊細な表現をしたい時に役に立つ一冊だと思います。重ねが多くなっても重くならないので軽快な作品を制作される時はとても参考になると思います。

Libro sofisticado, bueno en lo que queda y se lo recomiendo para aquellas personas q deseen apreciar el arte de los chinos en filigrana.

この本に掲載されているクイリング作品は、複数のクイリングペーパーを巧みに使っており色彩や表現が詩的で、すごく綺麗です！独特なパーツの作り方や作品への使い方も興味深く、制作意欲をそそる一冊です。
