Is this really D2 steel? Does it hold an edge like D2?

The manufacturer has been found to use SEVERAL different steels in various models of their knives advertised as "D2" (D2 is a high Carbon, high chromium, somewhat rust resistant tool steel for "cold work" machining, it WOULD make decent pocket knife blades). DON'T take that as advice not to get one, I have purchased 2 of these so far. I like them, they do sharpen nicely, I like the locking style and think these are well made, especially for the price. I had the second one checked at a local metal recycle business with a portable XRF (X-Ray Flourescence) scanner. This tester does NOT tell you how much Carbon, but it DOES find % of the metalic elements in alloys quite accurately. The hardness is a different story, very heat treat dependant. Haven't access to the test equipment, can tell you, judged subjectively from sharpening- This knife blade is pretty hard! Not quite as hard as my Japanese knives, which run around 60 - 63 on the Rockwell C scale, but way harder than my old Henckels 4 star which is around 54. Here is what I found out about the second EF3 (yellow handle) knife, I purchased this one last week. For a start, blade contained NO Manganese, Molybdenum or Silicon, all of which ARE found in D2. THIS IS NOT D2. Fe: 84.14% Cr: 14.25% Mn: .596% V: .195% Yours could be a completely different steel... If you can find a scrap yard or lab, please do test and report! It IS an OK knife steel, not junk at all and probably rather more stainless than real D2 would be. It's just not type of tool steel that was claimed, far less a new super steel-sexy-trendy-cutting edge-y PMC HIP. Want those? Going to add a 0 or two to the prices.

How is the steel heat treated? And is the spine of the knife able to spark a Ferro rod?

Sparks fine. Did some research. This Chinese D2 is Cr12MoV. Closest thing from China. The steel is not bad for the price, but it definitely does not compare with properly heat treated American D2.

What is the proper sharpening angle, and does it vary for different Eafengrow knives?

If you haven't bought this knife yet...don't. Step up to either 9cr18Mov,,440C or VG10. They are WAY easier to sharpen and hold a good edge. Or step up a lil more and SV30 steel. If..you already bought the knife. Yes a shallow angle and light pressure will get you there. D2 steel is hard but it really depends on the temper-heat treatment on good the edge will be. I have the knife and it just sits because its a PITA to get sharp. And it never gets as sharp as the other steels mentioned. Is it green or yellow?

Technically, green. A very yellow green.
