I brought this book years ago when I first started and I got it again to maybe use as a teaching tool. The music may not seem as relevant with today's seven string mayhem but this is still one off the best instruction Rock/metal books ever published. Troy is an excellent teacher and this book is well laid out. If you have a foundation in guitar playing and are thinking about exploring lead guitar I would say get this book. The music may seem dated to some ( not me ) but the techniques taught are all foundational. This is a must have in every guitarist's library I believe.

Do this... and you'll do it right; great foundation for all ideas to come!

The amount of material covered in part II is worth a four year degree at Temple University- I should know. It applies everything you want to know, or never knew was possible. Truly a great and informative lexicon of information. Oh...please buy part II as well. Trust me, it helps :-)

I have several of Troy's books and love them all. I found this book to be a step back for me in knowledge. I knew probably 85% of this material but it did show me a couple cool licks so it's worth keeping. This would be a great first step before moving on to his advanced books. I'd say a late 1st year or more likely a 2nd year guitarist may really benefit from these useful lessons. His books are easy to read and understand since he keeps it simple. Good luck!

This book rules - no other way to put it . I've been playing guitar for 5 years - no other book I've seen provides this thorough grounding in fundamental technique as applicable to metal - after a mere 2 months of serious practise ( 1 hr per day ) my playing rose by SEVERAL levels - with regard to speed / control and just plain and simple playing stuff that sounds good.Highly Recommended

The Tab is easy to ready and the direction you get teaches you fast and give you great ideas..

The execises are clear and well presented, but I'm only up to chapter 1.Solo #1 is proving to be a challenge, I assume the following solos will be too.So far so good.....

Awesome. Buy it for any style. In fact by up every instructional book in the series. Troy is an excellent teacher. Definately worth getting if your starting out. If more advanced get Lead and Rhythm 1 and 2. Get Speed Mechanics. Get Fretboard Mastery.
