Silly question but do the numbers denote the mm it will cut?

Yes, keep cutting till you reach that number which gives a fairly accurate hole size. Take care not to cut on too fast speed. I find good results when I use a slight circular motion when drilling as this helps not to overload the drill motor and also helps not to damage the cutter in the event of a jam.

Will these bits go through 6mm iron?

I would strongly suggest that you go through with a pilot drill first depending on what size you want to make the hole in you 6mm steel. It’s always best to start off with smaller drill size and just work up. The spiral grooved bits will take you to the diameter you want. One more tip if you haven’t got any cutting paste in your kit buy some it really helps and saves blunting your drills. I do hope this helps you?!
