It charged a battery from completely flat fine, maybe a little slower than the Makita charger, the only thing that concerned me was that the charger got very warm, with some chargers you would expect that with a dead flat battery, but my Makita charger never does. Since my son in law will only be using it occasionally for a work helmet light it might be okay. That is, he has not complained about it so far.
