Exactly what I was looking for
I decided on the Maxpedition notebook cover over the Rite in the Rain (RitR) notebook cover for the simple reason that the Maxpedition version has elastic loops on the inside to store pens. The RitR version only has external pockets for the pens. To be 100% accurate, the RitR cover has two large internal pockets, one of which could be used for pens although they would not be secure. The Maxpedition cover has 3 elastic loops inside of the top cover in varying sizes: large, medium, small. Any of these is perfect for securing pens. The smallest size is perfect for a slender Fisher-style pen, the larger loops being ideal for a thicker "tactical" pen. Like the RitR model, this notebook cover also has 4 external pockets for pens or similar sized items. The external pockets seem secure enough for holding pens, but my obsessive nature is happier with the pens on the inside. Like the RitR cover, there is also a second full size pocket in the inside top of the cover, likely intended for keeping a spare notebook. My only complaint is that I could do without the velcro loops on the cover and don't plan on using them. I suppose you could put a nametag on there to differentiate your notebook from someone elses, but I can't imagine the need to put a unit patch or flag patch on a notebook. I have deducted a star because it seems to me this patch would only retain dirt or mud, so I would definitely have preferred not to have it on the cover.I'm using this cover with a RitR brand notebook and Fisher Space pen. The notebook itself fits inside perfectly as does the pen in any of the internal elastic bands or external pockets. The pull strings on the zippers are a handy feature that isn't found on the RitR model. The entire setup is made to the usual high Maxpedition standards.

My Best piece of Max Gear
This is my favorite piece of Maxpedition gear. I thought the cover would simply have a single pocket for your notepad however, it has more then I thought. When you open the cover there are two large internal pockets. I use one pocket to hold my notepad. I slip the back cardboard of the notepad into one pocket and it's ready to go. The second internal pocket can hold your pens, pocket flashlight or screwdriver or just another notepad. I also use this cover for my LG Android phone in addition with three notepads at the same time. On the rear of this gear there are four large pen/pencil sized slots to hold your pens, penlight or pocket sized tool. I have a S&W Tactical Pen, Streamlight Stylus flashlight, Stanley pocket screwdriver and a pocket magnetic pickup tool that fit nicely in the four pen slots. The cover is not to large to fit in any of your pockets either. I carry mine in my shirt pocket where it's easily accessible. I'm enjoying my new Max. Notebook cover and I'm sure you will too. Nice solid piece, I'm sure I'll get many years of good service from this piece of gear. I highly recommend the purchase of this product.Maxpedition probably could have added a belt loop but it was designed as a notebook cover. Nice thing about this gear though is it's versatility. It does not need to be used as a notebook cover. You can use this to carry your iPod iPhone or Android a spare battery and a stylus in the rear slots. calling it a notebook cover was probably a bad marketing idea cause of it's agility.

Compact and sturdy
Broke in easily and fitted nicely in my pocket if slightly bulky for hip pocket carry. I solved that by removing the velcro to cut down on the bulk. One minor complaint is the pen loops and pockets are only usefull if you're not sitting on it (such as front packet or off body carry. It's uncomfortable in your hip pocket with anything in there but the notepad. It is very sturdy and I expect it to lst a long time. In addition to the conventional 3x5 spiral bound notepads, it can also fit the gluetop pads, i.e. Ampad "Evidence" pad.One thing to note is that the greenish khaki (British khaki?) color shown really is the color of the notebook cover. It's not the conventional American sand colored khaki.

Just Right
This little notebook cover is tough, rugged and just the right size at 3''x 5''. It fits nicely into a pocket or bag. This is a good thing to have in the grocery store. I like that I can zip it up with my pen inside. Nothing will get lost. There's even room for a few coupons in the small pocket.

The perfect size!
I got this to hold and protect my work notebook and it works perfectly! The slots carry my extra pens, some small screwdrivers a small Leatherman and it still fits in my safety vest pocket perfectly! I love this thing and carry it daily.
