DOESN'T PLAY 4K Movies
I have been using this drive since February. The number one reason for buying it is that it claims to Play 4K DVDs. The advert gives the impression that the drive will play 4K DVDs straight from the box. It doesn't. In its 'Drive Information' the 'Status' of the drive is 'not yet enabled'. This means it will not play 4K DVDs. To enable the drive to play/RIP 4K DVDs you have to 'flash' the firmware with additional software from a third party. When you've flashed the drive with this firmware the 'Drive Information Status' will read 'Enabled'. This means the drive can now play/RIP 4K dvds. This information is NOT in the advert or in the instructions that came with the drive. If you flash the wrong firmware into the drive, theres a high chance it might render the drive useless. I would not have purchased this drive if I knew it needed to be 'Enabled' in order to play/RIP 4K dvds. There are many standard Blu-ray players that will play/RIP 4K dvds once the drive's firmware has been flashed, or comes with the drive enabled. Which means I didn't 'have' to buy this one because it has 4K on it. It plays standard DVDs and Blu-rays OK. I haven't recorded any data to discs as yet. I have not flashed my drive so I'm unable to play/RIP 4K dvds. ***Additionally Information 28 Nov 2025*** I have updated the firmware of this drive from MakeMKV website. The drive now READS 4K discs which allows me to save mkv flies. But the drive doesn't play 4K movies.
