Q: my switch only doe 802.3af/at is this adaquit to correctly power this ap as im getting connection drop out issue , my devices lose ssid every 20min ?

802.3af is perfect. What type of Ethernet Cable? Do you have spare Ethernet cable you can test with?

Q: I'm totally tech challenged, so sorry about that, but how does this work? Can you use it for traveling or do i need a hot-spot device?

This is an access point, you need to feed an ethernet connection via an ethernet cable in order for it to distribute it. It is not a HotSpot.
