Adorable and cool
So I needed a mortar and pestle for grinding herbs and did not have a large budget so I went on Amazon to look and found this amazing thing. The weight is pretty nice is weighs enough to know it’s high quality but is light enough to carry in loose athletic shorts!!! The stability of the bowl is pretty good aswell it sounds beautiful. The grinding is pretty good as the rough cut the bowl is made with gives it the perfect texture to crush herbs. It’s super easy to clean and takes around 1-3 minutes to do so.

Like the weight
Pretty heavy mortar and pestle set. This weight allows it to be stable while you grind. Do like it. Only negative is that the granite has natural cracks that have been filled with an epoxy. Not sure how well the epoxy will hold up over time. For now, it is working great.

Great size
I have a larger one but so heavy. This is perfect size, making it easier to clean. Pretty can leave on counter, I use 2-3 times a day.

Excellent grinder! Must be “primed” first
Thank you Stephen Scott for YOUR review. I would not have bought this if not for Mr. Scott’s simple instructions on how to prep a machine-made marble item. Some reviewers complained that the bowl of this pairing had “ridges” & imperfections that impeded the ability to grind. I was not going to buy this , but then I saw that it had a simple fix: add water to the mortar and grind with the pestle. Water is a lubricant, and the form-fit pestle will grind down the ridges through simple friction. The water gets milky as you grind down the ridges, which also adds grit to the water, making the process easier. I just left my new set on the counter, grinding each time I passed it by, and in a few days it was perfect. During that whole time I didn’t rinse (that would have gotten rid of the abrasive effect of the grit). When I saw the ridges were worn smooth, it was Tim to rinse, dry & use. It’s perfect for spice mixes.

Beautiful, but not functional out of the box!
Out of the box this mortar and pestle is beautiful! But, the inside of the mortar is not useful because it is not finished on the inside! The inside is completely polished and has the rings from where they bored out the bowl. There is absolutely no toothe at all for grinding. This smooth finish with rings caused whatever you put into this device to slip and slide around in the bowl. I attached photos of the two mortar and pestles I purchase on amazon. The Fox Run 8" and the Chef'n marble 5". The second one I purchased, came beautifully finished with great toothe and it has a silicone base to hold it firmly while grinding. It is smaller, so I can't make a large batch of Pesto. However, I did take some sandpaper to the Fox Run 8" Mortar and it did smooth out the ridges inside and took away the polished surface inside and it also added a little toothe. I used 60 grain sandpaper, which is really rough and it still didn't have enough toothe inside the bowl. I am probably going to take it to my local stone countertop store and see if they can rough it up a little more. I love the size and the beauty of the Mortar and Pestle and that is why I am willing to take the extra measures to make it the way I need it to become more useful. By the way, until it is sanded to create toothe, you will probably never be able to grind rice in this unit. It will just swish around in the bowl and pop out and it will also get caught in the ridges. If you have some really rough sandpaper, it doesn't take long to remove the ridges and add some tooth to it and you will be really happy you took the time!

Mortar and Pestle Double Purpose Use
Always wanted a mortar/pestle set and found one I really liked with color to match our kitchen. A nice heavy marble set that really works. The price for a one time purchase was reasonable considering the material is made from marble and is sturdy and weighted enough. I don't foresee any breakage happening from its use as its so easy to use in the hand and serves a functional purpose as a pill crusher and for raw dried spices for cooking. I'm very satisifed with this item.

I'm not a playa, I just crush alot.
First of all, it wasn't broken! I could feel it rolling around in the product box and I just thought, "oh, that's the problem." Looks like somebody doesn't read their own reviews about their product. Or they just like re-shipping for damaged items. Well, I got lucky. As for the product, it is better than I ever expected it to be. I was done with all the pill pulverizers that claimed they could grind something into a fine powder. I'm not dextrous enough to use a standard mortar and pestle so this was like a dream come true. It crushed my pills into powder in minutes, and these are some crunchy pills to crush. It left a few small, miniscule chinks upon close examination. The next day I experimented with it and stumbled upon a method that produced clean, consistent, powder. It was so fine you could rub the debris on a baby's behind like baby powder. Because I bought this, I am going to get maybe 4 hours of my life back per week, not having to resort to my self crush and grind technique. It works great, it's a functional decoration, and it gets the job done quickly and easily. The rough interior and pestle surface leave some debris to clear off, but it takes about a minute to clear them off. That's the thing about real powder, it does that quite often. I just can't praise this product enough. Original : 7/26/2012 Edit: 8/20/2012 The more you learn about this thing, the better you get your rhythm and positioning down, the better it gets. Now that I've gotten this thing broken in I'm pulverizing 4 rock hard pills at a time in less than five minutes. The powder is actually getting finer and finer. The presence of chunks is almost null. The process is so relaxing too. You don't have to put your wrist into it, just find your technique and sit back. Every pill crusher should have one. It's also a great decoration.
