It is easy: with a vise. Put it in the vise in any orientation, but lengthwise is best. Close the jaws so the walnut is held. Put your hand underneath the walnut to catch the pieces if necessary and gradually tighten the vise. It may make a cracking sound several times as you tighten without actually coming apart easily. You can remove it and see if you can manually open it. If not, put it back in and continue. Sometimes the walnut will "explode," but you will get the hang of it.

Q: Have these been chemically treated, heated, frozen, or treated in any other manner that would destroy their viability? I am looking for seed to plant.

Hello, Thanks for your interest in our walnuts! NO! These walnuts have never been chemically treated, heated or frozen. We use these seeds for planting ourselves. We typically create a small hole and drop 3 seeds in each hole. Typically 1 of the three will germinate and create a sapling. Also, these are stored in a large pole barn, which is out of the weather. However, we had a few days in Missouri in January where it was -5 degrees and the pole barn could of had a slight frost in it during those cold days. We cannot guarantee that each seed will germinate. We have personally used seeds that have subjected to below freezing temperatures for extended periods and they have germinated with no problems. Black Walnuts are tough and can handle a lot, but the germination process is tricky and conditions have to be ideal for the black walnut to germinate. Let us know if you have anymore questions!

How do you open them
