An ExcellentAdapter
I have used this particular adapter in the past for using Software programs on my PC to load programs into industrial pieces of equipment equipped with serial ports. It worked so well that I purchased it for my entire sales force and currently have it installed on XP, Vista, and Windows 7. The drivers are easily downloaded from the manufacturers website and sets up in less than 5 minutes. If you need a reliable USB to Serial adapter, this is the one.

Redesigned, no longer outputs proper voltages
This unit was redesigned, and ruined, with no change in model number or exterior, which is particularly dishonest. It used-to output +/- 9volts on pins 3, 4 & 7. The newer version only outputs +/- 5v, just like every other no-name cheap junk USB-RS232 adapter out there. As a result the version currently available here no longer works with a lot of older equipment that the older model worked with. The only visible exterior difference is that my older models had a serial number printed on the label below the P/N, while the new version omits the serial number. Serial number looked like a date stamp, too, starting with "2017" which was probably the year. Instead of this overpriced thing that no longer works well and is relying on it's old reputation, you'll do better to get a Tripp-lite U209-000-R which does output proper voltages, and is cheaper than this bad one.

Very good quality USB to Serial adapter cable
I have two of these cables now and they are excellent quality. They are the only cables supported by some of the process automation firms for connection to PLC controls. I have used them to connect my laptop to both PLC process controllers and a CNC machining center, plus an older serial pen plotter. They worked as expected in both cases.

gold x usb serial cord
the first time use this cord was in 2006 one came with my embroidery machine. I brought this one to tie my laptop to embroidery machine. ..the only thing that I did not like was it was not long enough 12 ft. would have work better. this is the only brand that I will use, on my machine.

Works
Didn't realize that USB to serial cables are sometimes different. I bought a cheaper one for use with a modem and a Toshiba telephone system. The cheaper cable didn't work, but this one does. I have used the other type (Prolific known under other brands) with good success, but this time it required a better cable. I don't know if it's the hardware or the drivers, but it works.

NO Windows 8 drivers = NO WORK ON WINDOWS 8
Have used on windows XP and worked great - 5 stars then. Does not work on windows 8, even when in compatibility mode. So, if you have Windows 8, don't risk it. Some people have reported it worked for them in compatibility mode.

Works as advertised
If you're looking for RS-232/COM to USB...don't get anything else. I bought two other products on Amazon that proved to be fakes or just ineffective. This product worked immediately and has two LED's on it that reassure you it is connected correctly.
