Ipanema Girl: The Very Best Of

As another contributor has highlighted, the sound quality on this disc is variable at best and even very poor on certain tracks. Having compared the tracks on this compilation to the same recordings on other discs (mainly Verve), I have to conclude that the master tapes were not used for this disc. It occurred to me that the sound is reminiscent of those old vinyl LP's where manufacturers would try to cram 20-30 tracks onto the disc. In this day and age overload distortion of this magnitude should not be possible from an engineering perspective. Definitely not the best I'm afraid.

It was a brilliant purchase. I would definitely recommend this album for those who want to appreciate Bossa Nossa whilst understanding the lyrics (which is in English).

Astrud Gilberto (gebürtige Weinert mit deutschen Wurzeln), das Girl von Ipanema, zeigt auf der hier besprochenen rund 78minütigen Sammlung mit 28 Titeln, daß die Assoziation mit ihrem größten und berühmtesten Hit natürlich für immer allgegenwärtig sein wird, daß dies aber keineswegs ihr einziger hervorzuhebener Titel ist. Klar, ist die hier enthaltene Version mit Stan Getz am Saxophon, ihrem damaligen Ehemann Joao Gilberto und Antonio Carlos Jobim (neben Vinicius De Moraes der Urheber dieses All-Time Evergreens) ein nicht mehr wegzudenkender Klassiker. Doch zeigen z.B. “Agua De Beber“, “Tristeza“, “Call Me“, die überlange Abschlußnummer “Beginnings“ oder ihre 1965er-Interpretation des bereits ein Jahr zuvor von Frank Sinatra berühmt gemachten “Fly Me To The Moon“, daß sich die Klasse und Popularität der Sängerin keineswegs nur auf den Riesenhit beschränkt. Ihre häufig von einer gewissen Melancholie durchtränkte Stimme verleiht dem Bossa Nova-lastigen Latinjazz brasilianischer Herkunft der mitt- und spätsechziger Jahre eine unverwechselbare Note und auch die in den Easy Listening-Bereich oder Pop gehenden späteren Sachen wie “Trains And Boats And Planes“ profitieren von ihrer unvergleichlichen Note mit den charakteristischen “Ba-Da-Ba-Das“, die gerne mal eingeworfen werden. Es wird sowohl in englisch als auch portugiesisch gesungen. Das beiligende Booklet beinhaltet noch einen Begleittext von Charles Waring (Mojo/Record Collector). Eine wunderbare Zusammenstellung mit zum träumen und relaxen einladender wunderschöner Musik, die einmal mehr erahnen läßt, welch vielseitiger und großer Umfang durch den lapidaren Begriff des “Jazz“ abgedeckt wird. If you love bossa nova sound, if you love listening 'The Girl from Ipanema' from Classic 'Stan Getz/ Gilberto' album, this beautiful compilation is absolute essential for your collection! The CD cover 28 beautiful bossa nova tunes from Astrud's solo career and her colloboration with other artists. So far i havent found one song i let go from this compilation. What can i say about her voice, she is one of those gifted artist of her time, making Brazilian Bossa Nova a world affair for music lovers.CD had fine 3 pages inner cover notes enlightening you about Gilberto along with mentioning from which albums they made this lovely compilation. The mastering is done at Abbey Road Studio, the Mecca of recording.Go for it...Make your evenings more beautiful.

... umfasst diese superbe Collection von 28 Stücken. Die Auswahl ist sowohl musikalisch, als auch klanglich auf absolutem top Niveau. Auch "Agua De Beber" oder das traumwandlerische "Photograph" nehmen den Zuhörer mit auf eine Reise ins Brasilien der 60er Jahre, als die Welt vermeintlich noch etwas unbekümmerter war. Mit "Tristeza" wird es dann schon etwas tanzbarer und mit der Interpretation von "Fly Me To The Moon" zeigt sich das ganze Leistungsspektrum von Astrud Gilberto.Da die Compilation 28 Stücke umfasst, werde ich jetzt nicht mehr weiter auf einzelne Stücke eingehen. Allerdings kann ich vorausschicken, dass von sanften relaxten Balladen, jazzigen Einflüssen bis hin zu tanzbaren Stücken alles dabei ist.Wer sich einen Eindruck von dem Leistungsspektrum der Sängerin in den Jahren 1963 bis 1970 machen will, wird hier super bedient. Es gibt eben nicht nur den genialen Serge Mendes, sondern viel mehr im aktuellen WM Land zu entdecken.

20代の事から数十年。季節の良し悪しに係らず、読書やボーッとする時には、このヘタウマのジルベルトは必須のアイテムであります。既にアルバムベースでは当然何枚か所有しておりますが、それらはいずれも充分な曲数とは言えないものや重複もあり、やはり自身のプレイリストを作らなければと思っていた矢先、このCDを発見。内容、曲数は勿論、押さえどころの名曲についても過不足ない。又この価格であれば、ベストパーフォーマンスベストと言えます。

I picked up Astrud Gilberto's 5 Original Albums a while ago and fell in love with it. However, it was missing some of my favorite songs. For whatever reason the albums not included in that collection are uncommon and expensive; so I resorted to looking for a greatest hits package that had what I was looking for and stumbled across this one. This collection had all my missing favorites that I was looking for: "The Girl from Ipanema", "Corcovado", "Fly Me to the Moon", "Shadow of your Smile", "Misty Roses"... If I was introducing Gilberto to a friend, this would be the album I would loan them. 5 Original Albums

I fell in love with Astrud Gilberto back in 1967 while serving in Vietnam. Her voice was so peaceful, and pleasant to listen to. I also loved Bossa Nova Music. This is a good album to have in your collection, in my opinion.

This is a great album and she has a great voice. Don't get me wrong... the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I am such a big Bebel Gilberto fan I had to hold one star back.
