Math Refresher for Adults: The Perfect Solution (Mastering Essential Math Skills)

I highly recommend this book for any adults returning to school. I am preparing for nursing school after working for several years in a different profession. I have not studied math in about 30 years and used these books before I took the Accuplacer exam. I did VERY well on the Accuplacer Next – Generation Arithmetic (300/300!) after finishing the book and videos. I am now using it to study for the Math section of the HESI exam. The book is an amazing value. Each section comes with very helpful videos online that you can watch and then use the book to practice what you are taught in the video. The videos are broken down into small sections, so you will not be overwhelmed by the material – it is PERFECT for someone trying to fit in studying math between work and family obligations. After a few videos, you will start to hear Mr. Fisher’s calm voice explaining math to you as you work on the practice problems. I am NOT a natural “math-lete”, but these books actually made me enjoy learning math!

The Math Refresher for Adults book is a great resource for anyone looking to rebuild confidence in basic math skills. It covers essential topics like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, and basic algebra in an easy-to-follow format.

As a 52 year old adult who has always enjoyed math; this workbook is an excellent practice tool to keep my mind sharp and math skills current.

I waited to review this book until after I finished it so I could see how everything went. I purchased this book because I'm going to be starting school again and I was really concerned about doing College Algebra. It's been so long since I've been in school and math is one of my harder subjects as I mix up numbers and can't remember how to do more complex equations. I loved that this book is very thorough by starting with basic math and progressing to the algebra and geometry portions. This was great as it helped to rebuild my math skills so that by the end of the book I was solving problems with more ease than before I started the book. I didn't really use the videos they said we have access to. First, because I didn't find a video to every lesson, second, if I couldn't understand the concept being taught I looked up videos on YouTube and found excellent help from there. Helpful tip: I also found a fractions calculator online that helped me work through a problem if I couldn't understand where I went wrong. Each page has review exercises that has problems taught earlier in the book. I liked this as it kept things fresh in my mind for how to solve a problem. Then the page had "Helpful Hints." This is where it shows the concept you will be working on for that page and how to solve the problem. It's not super informative, but gives enough that I understood 98% of what was being taught from that section. I only needed outside help from videos a few times. Other than that it was easy to figure out how to complete the problems. Lastly, there are 10 problems you will solve related to the concept shown in the Helpful Hints section. There is a review after each section in the book that goes over all the previous pages for that particular subject- such as fractions- the review page will have 20 questions related to fractions. Finally, after the lessons on page 197-224 are addition practice problems you can do for the algebra portion of the book. Each page has 20 problems you can work out to fine tune your skills. The book ends with a 100 question final that goes over all concepts taught in the book. I gave 4 stars because there were about 4 pages I ended up not being able to do as I didn't understand the concept or it wasn't taught in the book. Overall, this book was a great resource and I feel it gave me confidence to take the next step in my education. I was so impressed I purchased it for my sister as well.

Very good. It is best to do a little everyday. Goes from basic math to very beginning of algebra1.

Wanted to brush up on my math skills 20 years after high school. I've tried several other books but the way they were written left me feeling overwhelmed. I was able to jump right into this and re-learn much of what I had forgotten as well as learn some new things I had never learned in school! Richard W. Fisher's book is written in the simplest way possible. You aren't overwhelmed by half a page of mathematical formulas followed by a complicated explanation and practice quiz. Each mathematical concept is broken down into it's most basic components. A few sentences of instruction are given and then you are given some examples of how it looks on paper and then you are given some practice questions so you can try the formulas yourself. In this way you are given time to build confidence and test your grasp of the formulas by having a top to bottom understanding of how they work. This approach puts you are in a good position to understand the terminology and symbology of the lessons you are studying as well as future lessons. If you ever struggled with math or are a slow learner this is the book for you!

Great questions and amount of them. It covers most of what will be on college placement test. This is also nice for a simple review for SAT lower math segments. However, my complaint is that there are no instructions on how to complete the math questions. So, we use mathhelp and khan for videos, but it would've been nice if they were included.

Excellent refresher in the homeschool curriculum. Students are always on track and progressing yet keeping prior applications fresh in their memory bank.

Great for a math refresh starting with the basic, with a logical progression

This is a workbook, not an explainer. The book itself is one big exam with very few lessons (all the lessons are online videos) Complete waste of money.

I would have added more stars if it didnt came with the pages 11 to 26 torn off but i did buy a used one so there’s that. It is a good refresher and also has video tutorials online written

Just needed something to brush up my maths with, and found this book. It’s a really good purchase for any adult wanting to do the same.
