Good Compost
Jack's Magic is a lovely compost, not full of bits like you get in some composts. Looking forward to seeing how plants and bulbs display in future.

Jacks Magic Original formula - Winning the onion germination race
First off, the description of this compost has changed. The compost I have does not have ‘naturally peat free’ written on the side, but packaging is identical in every other respect. Except for a small diagram on the back that says ‘peat content’ then doesn’t give a percentage. I believe my bag has peat in it. Originally described as made from ‘leaf compost and bracken’ (which I believe is high in potassium). This rating is for the traditional bag I have, which must be an old bag. It is bagged in County Tyrone, Ireland. This compost has a nice texture for seeds. It does have splinters of wood in it, so wear gloves and sift. Hence 4/5. The new ‘peat free’ version now described is completely different in every respect. (Bought a bag at the garden centre today). It has ‘bark and forest products and recycled green waste’, which could be anything. Green waste has a very bad reputation for attracting fungus gnats, those pesky black flies that get everywhere. Especially in warmer conditions when germinating seeds indoors. I do not recommend this for indoor potted plants. These gnats can kill and stunt your seedlings. Green waste is composted at high temperatures. It is very course, not suitable for small seeds, (I will try to sift it). Full of lots of bits of twigs, wood and even more splinters. And lots of gritty sand. It’s a horrible texture and won’t even go into seed trays/modules easily. In short it is like every other generic ‘peat free’ compost I have seen. Horrible. I reserve judgement until I can test it with a bunch of seeds, to see if anything will actually germinate in it, or big up my plants. I’ve yet to find a good peat free compost, that doesn’t need propping up with liquid feed and slow release fertiliser. This shouldn’t cost you more than £8 for a big bag. Anything else is overpriced. To be clear my bag says it includes seaweed, calcium, magnesium - and west + 2 formula for moisture control. Whatever that is? I think it’s a wetting agent. This phrase has been changed to BIO 3 on some bags. Whatever that is? I just wish consumers could see on the bag/description exactly what is in their compost straight away, and some indication of proportion. For example contains seaweed - does that mean a teaspoon or a bucketful? It’s frustrating for consumers to buy a product year in year out, and then suddenly find their plants aren’t growing, and the formula for their favourite compost has changed. My bag suggests I buy another Westlands product ‘boost’ after 4 weeks. Because although the peat free version is ‘full of nutrition’ it runs out after 4 weeks, and you need to spend more money to make it work. Hmmm?

Not bad but came with a big hole
Came with a big round hole in the side of the bag - not such a big deal but interesting how the hole occurred - a round hole, similar to something created by a rat
