TROPICA - Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) - 30 SeedsWorth knowing: The exotic cardamom plant is a member of the ginger plant family. Together with saffron and vanilla it ranks among the most expensive spices of the world. In its natural habitat, the reed-like plant is growing to a height of 3 metres. Grown in a pot or tub within our regions, it reaches a height of about one metre. The fruit's 10-20 seeds bear the flavouring substances.Origin: The cardamom plant is a native of India, Thailand and Central America. Propagation: Leave the seeds to soak in water at room temperature overnight and distribute them on moist cultivation soil or herb soil. Cover the seeds thinly with cultivation soil and keep the substratum evenly moist. Move the container in a warm position (22°-25°C) until germination. First seedlings appear after 10-14 days. Place / Light: As a spice, cardamom supports the digestive system and stimulates the circulation. The sweetish but nevertheless slightly hot flavour is part of many mixtures of natural spices like curry or masala. In Central Europe, cardamom is mostly known as an ingredient of ginger bread spice. In Arabic countries cardamom is used to flavour coffee. Indians on the other side use it to flavour their chai-tea. It also tastes excellently in meat and duck dishes. Care: Cardamom loves climates that are evenly warm and moist. Places in winter gardens, kitchen window sills or miniature greenhouses are ideal. Best is to choose a semi-shaded position, since its leaves will get burned when being exposed to full sun. Winter period: Sufficient light and a high degree in humidity will help the plant to make it through the winter. Spray the leaves with water now and then. Water sparingly once a week. Increase water supply from March on. Bonsai Suitability: No
