A Fantastic Book!
If you enjoy historical fiction and are a Christian (or interested in learning about Christianity), this is for you. It takes you back to Roman times into their Empire and you feel as though you’re there, living the life of Romans and their conquered people. I am a Christian and found it extremely interesting, gripping and uplifting. This author is very talented and I shall now read the next book in this series and others written by her. Thank you Francine.

Most inspirational book that transformed my life
What can I say...... As a Christian for many years, I was both inspired and challenged as I read this fantastic book. The setting and atmosphere of that time were skilfully depicted as the author painted a picture of that era, giving the reader a tangible insight into things such as sights, smells and taste. The characters were so vivid and real that I felt I had an affinity with them all. So much so I almost thought I could personally go and give Julia a good shaking, encourage Hadassah and comfort Marcus. I highly recommend this book both as an encouragement to every believer as well as a revelation to non-believers. Truly a great read!!!

Fine 1st century yarn
This is a well written yarn based in the Roman world of the first century from a Christian perspective. Its a page-turner, easy to read, and full of insight into the culture of the time - which is probably its strongest point. Francine Rivers has reputedly done her history homework well and I enjoyed this aspect of the book most. The only gripes I've got are not a criticism of how well the book is written, but really just the nature of fiction of this type. It must be impossible to write for a 21st Century western mindset, and accurately reflect the 1st Century culture. She does a great job (I think), but I'm constantly left with the impression that this is a modern perspective of how people must have reacted and felt about life. For example, there are some acts committed which a 21st Century American Christian would find utterly appalling, and of course the story has the 1st Century Jewish Christian reflect that same attitude. But then you're left thinking how accurate that would be. And we cannot know.Having said that, the inevitable comparison of Roman culture with modern western culture is one of the features that make the book so good. The writing is not demanding and the novel contains lots of realistic gore. I wouldn't have a problem letting my teenager read it unless you have a very sensitive child.

Great story, well worth reading
This is the first of Francine Rivers books. It takes a few pages to get into the story as it begins with detailed descriptions of the life and times of the period around 70AD, however, persevere as it develops into a fascinating, gripping storyline that I found difficult to put down. The descriptions of the era are detailed and obviously well researched and the characters within are honestly written to the point where they really get under your skin. A fantastic story, must be followed by 'Echo in the darkness'.

Well done Francine I certainly wasn't disappointed.
I have red all three Mark of the Lion books and thought they were excellent. My favorite was Voice in the wind the story of Haddasa. As a Christian myself I was interested in life and history around that time. I was taken on a journey that affected every emotion I have and also how empowering faithis against fear. I really couldn't put it down.

If possible I would give 10 stars for this book!
This was by far the best book I've ever read.I've read Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers and was amazed, but after reading this one...It is going to be hard now to find a book to beat this one!Reading this book I felt transported to the past, to the primitive church, I could see clearly how it was in the past.It was amazing the way that I could picture it all in my mind. I imagine there was lots of research by the author when writting this book and I really liked to know all about society in that time, it shows reality and not fairy tale.If fairy tale is what you want then this book might not be for you, but if you want a story that will make you think and realize things for your own life and at the same time enjoy, then this book is for you! When reading this one, make sure that you have the second one already, because you won't be able to wait to start the next book!It will take a while for you to stop thinking about Hadassah as well...And I really hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!
