StoryBranding 2.0: Creating Stand-Out Brands Through The Power of Story

A Highly Useful Template for Analyzing/Creating a Brand's Narrative
This was a required book for a narrative marketing class I took. We were required to do all the steps as a project. Having read the book and completed the StoryBranding 2.0 process from beginning-to-end I can say the following:1) It is internally coherent without being overloaded with jargon.2) It is externally relevant because many well-known companies lack a Unique Value Proposition (UVP) (the goal of Signorelli's process is to identify the UVP that will resonate with the brand's current and prospective customers).3) It has a timeless aspect to it. Although narrative marketing and storytelling can ebb and flow in terms of marketing best-practice trends, the ideas in the book will still be relevant as long as people have a choice in which brands to buy from.4) The book teaches process more than merely knowledge/information.5) The process does not replace other marketing concerns (e.g., SEO optimization, KPI's, visual strategy), but it can complement and even drive these other concerns.6) The book is a guide that is a foot wide and a mile deep. You are not getting a 'Top 10' list of how to use story. You are not getting a smattering of advice that you can get from dozens of content-marketing blogs. You are getting an actionable guide on how to look at a company inside and out with the goal of creating an authentic, unique message that resonates.7) I was happy with the balance of the writing—the author explained what he needed to without being long-winded.In summary, the book is practical and delivers on its subtitle, "Creating Stand-out Brands Through The Power of Story".

Good as a knowledge
The contents can't be applied to each person's businesses directly. But, knowing this kind of idea will be important.

It was not what I expected, but still a good read
I liked the casual, friendly and "from experience" writing style of this book. It made the book easy and enjoyable to read. I laughed out loud a couple of times. I bought the book because I thought it was going to focus more on the mechanics of storytelling. It does not. The book is focused on Story Branding - which makes sense, given the title. My mistake for making assumptions. That said, if you want to understand what story branding is and the process and mechanics of developing a story brand, this is a very good book. It is clear, easy to follow, compelling and accessible. I'm a senior marketing consultant, so for me it was familiar territory. I'm already a story branding convert. I certainly enjoyed the book, learned a few things and have been inspired to continue even deeper down the story branding rabbit hole. I think a business owner looking to get their head around the idea of story branding will be well served by this book. I think the same goes for marketing students, who want to move beyond what they learn in school about consumer products marketing.
