An entertaining and readable Roman history from a different point of view. There are a couple of inaccuracies but otherwise the book is enjoyable and has a nice touch of humour even if the use of modern colloquialisms can be a little wearing

The author takes us through the rise, triumph, decline and fall of the Roman Empire via the lives of 21 women from history.The tone of the book is that of a friend explaining something they are expert and passionate about, after a couple of glasses of wine.It is meticulously researched, with pages and pages of references, while regularly being laugh out loud funny.I'd recommend it to anyone with more than a passing interest in the lives of Roman citizens during the period.

A fascinating book telling the stories of the women of Rome. I would definitely recommend this to all who are fascinated with the history of the Roman Empire. I’m looking forward to reading more of Emma Southon’s books

I really enjoy Emma’s writing.

It's always good, and unfortunately still unusual, to see books centred around the lives of women in history. This one covers the Roman Empire through the lives of a wide variety of women and I really enjoyed it. Her style is chatty, very easy to read and often funny - not what you'd normally expect in a history book but makes a change and certainly doesn't hide how knowledgeable the author is. Very entertaining and informative.

Fascinating to see the Roman world from a different perspective, as we don’t often hear from the women. It’s an interesting take on the more familiar stories. Highly recommended for all Roman history fans
