Solid router for home VPN use
I’ve been using the Flint 2 mostly for VPN at home and it’s been great. Setup was simple; I got WireGuard up and running pretty quickly. The speeds are solid and I haven’t noticed any slowdowns even with multiple devices connected. Wi-Fi coverage is strong throughout the house and the signal stays stable. I also like that it has 2.5G ports, which are a nice bonus if you’re doing any heavy data transfers or just want fast wired connections. One feature I really like is the built-in AdGuard Home support. It blocks ads and trackers across the whole network so I don’t have to mess with browser extensions on every device. It’s super useful for a cleaner, faster browsing experience and for keeping things a bit more private. What I appreciate most is the flexibility. It runs on OpenWrt, so if you’re into tweaking settings or setting up custom configurations, it gives you the room to do that. That said, it still works great out of the box if you don’t want to mess with anything. Overall, it does exactly what I need: fast, reliable, and secure VPN for home use with a few extra features that make a real difference. Would recommend.

Secure, Powerful, and Worth the Effort
This router has truly proved to be an efficient, powerful, and remarkably flexible piece of kit. I initially planned to use the Flint 2 simply as a VPN front-end for my existing Google Nest WiFi mesh system, allowing the Google hardware to handle the Wi-Fi. However, once I started the setup, I quickly realized the Flint 2 was capable enough to stand on its own, and I opted to remove the entire Google mesh network and use the Flint 2 exclusively. The performance has been exceptional. Performance & Features VPN Excellence: The WireGuard client performance with my Surfshark subscription is stellar. The ability to run full-speed VPN and configure Domain-based Split Tunneling (to exclude services like Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4) directly on the router is a game-changer for UK streaming. AdGuard Home: The integrated AdGuard Home feature provides network-wide ad and tracker blocking, creating a cleaner, faster browsing experience across all devices. Network Segmentation: I appreciate the ability to use a Guest Network for low-trust IoT devices (switches, smart plugs) for superior security, keeping my high-value devices segregated on the main network. The Learning Curve (Why it's not 'Plug and Play') To be transparent, this is not a product for beginners. It is a powerful piece of hardware that requires an understanding of network principles to unlock its potential. As the manufacturer states, it's not a plug-and-expect-everything-to-work device. It has taken a couple of days of focused tweaking to get every setting perfectly optimized (especially integrating the VPN, AdGuard, and resolving connectivity issues on devices like Google Nest Hubs due to advanced Wi-Fi features). The Gemini Advantage: This is where modern AI assistance (specifically Google Gemini) made setting things up a breeze. By feeding the logs from both the Flint 2 and AdGuard directly into Gemini, I received simple, step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting advice to resolve tricky blocking and Wi-Fi compatibility issues. As someone with a technical background, Gemini made the configuration process highly efficient and straightforward. Conclusion: I absolutely do not regret buying this. It has replaced a complex mesh network with a single, highly capable device. The flexibility and raw performance are outstanding, and I am confident that my home network is now fast, highly secure, and optimized for both privacy and streaming performance. If you have some technical knowledge and want the absolute best control over your home network, the Flint 2 is the clear choice.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Absolutely Unmatched – Hidden Features That Make This a Dream!!!!
If I could give this 10 stars, I would. This isn't just a router — it's a full network control centre hiding in plain sight - even for me that knows next to nothing about networks. I bought the GL.iNet Flint 2 expecting decent Wi-Fi and a few nice extras, but this thing has completely changed how I run my home network. --> Here's what nobody is talking about in the reviews: 1. Drop-In Gateway Mode (The “Secret Weapon”) This feature lets you add the Flint to your existing network without replacing your old router — and still get full control over everything. This should be one the front of the box as it is mind blowing!! That means: - No weird setup clashes - No “double NAT” problems (where you have two routers trying to be the boss) - No IP conflicts - No headaches I was able to move all my smart home gear over to the Flint (like cameras, sensors, smart plugs, etc.) without touching my old PlusNet router settings. It just worked — like magic. I still do not have nay idea how they did this! 2. Built-in NAS (Network Attached Storage) I plugged in a USB solid-state drive (SSD), and within 30 seconds, I had a shared network folder for my whole house. No extra software. No technical setup. It's like having a mini file server built right into the router. The only thing it will not do is file sync between devices, but hey, bung a 1Tb USB3 SSD onto this and you have a discount network storage system, you cant have it all. 3. Tailscale, AdGuard, and VPNs – Built In!!! These just work, and using the Drop-In Gateway Mode, this all just happens behind the existing router. It is mind blowing, this all just works with the existing IPS provided router sitting there with no idea all this is going on! - Tailscale: Secure, encrypted connection to your home network from anywhere in the world. Works across phones, tablets, laptops, even while on 4G or public Wi-Fi. No port forwarding needed. ---> One note on this: You can't set Tailscale as an exit node in Drop-In Gateway Mode, which is a bit annoying. Suppose it just is not able to configure enough settings to run this way when it is not in main control? But...it works a dream as an exit node once it is the main router. That means any device with Tailscale can connect to, and use your home network securely from anywhere in the world, which is amazing! - AdGuard Home: Blocks ads, trackers, and malware at the network level. All devices benefit automatically — no need to install ad blockers on each one. - WireGuard & OpenVPN: These are VPN (Virtual Private Network) options that protect your traffic and can let you appear as if you're browsing from home when away. Great for remote working, bypassing restrictions, or accessing local devices securely. 4. Full OpenWRT Access for Advanced Users If you know what OpenWRT is (a Linux-based open-source router OS), then you already know why this is amazing. You can: - SSH into the router - Install custom packages (like fail2ban, iperf, etc.) - Tweak firewall rules - Monitor logs in real time It’s like having your own little Linux server at the heart of your network. This router should be called “The FlintForge” — it’s a network Swiss Army knife disguised as a consumer router. This is the first product I’ve bought in years that exceeded every expectation. I’ve already ordered another for a family member, and I’m not done yet. If you're even slightly technical — or just want more privacy, more speed, and total control — this is the best 100 odd quid you’ll ever spend.

Amazing value, much improved our home network
Brilliant router. Often available on offer so great value for money. Wifi range is great and fast, 2.5gb ports work nicely. Router doesn't looked ridiculous like some of the gaming ones available and has holes in the back for wall mounting, so this is easy to hide away. User interface is a nice layer over openwrt and all the openwrt settings are available too. Support is good with regular firmware updates and because it's based on openwrt, this will keep running and be updatable even after the manufacturer stops supporting it.

Wished I'd Ordered this Months Ago
Where to start? I needed to update my R6800 Netgear Router last year, so bought a TP-Link Archer BE6500 WiFi 7 router. Did all the usual researching and comparing for days before deciding on that, but only just realised that they put all their URL / Domain filter capabilities behind a paywall! I hadn't focussed on that particular feature aspect at the time, but when I came to actually need this feature I was really disappointed that TP-Link did this - disgraceful. So this week, I went on the search again for another router at a resonable price that did NOT put these features behind a paywall. More research and started looking at the GL.inet range of routers. Initially I had some mixed feelings, given some of the reviews, but it's important to filter the reviews by the actual model, because as usual, Amazon stupidly rope all the reviews for all the products together. The GL.inet MT-6500 Flint 2 has generally great reviews, although a slightly older Wi-Fi 6model, BUT, has a more powerful processor than the recent Wi-Fi 7 GL.inet Flint 3 / 3e routers. The Flint 2 is actually more powerful! It also has 1Gb DDR4 RAM, and a 2.0 GHz Quad Core Processor plus an 8Gb embedded Multi Media Card, so plenty of onboard storage to run many of the plethora of Plugins available. The Flint 2 also runs OpenWRT, so it is hugely configurable! There is a more basic graphical Web interface for those not so savvy with router configuration that you can use for an easy and quick setup, along with the GL.inet an APP, but you can also switch instantly to LuCI which is the more advanced web interface that provides access to the more advanced features, like creating multiple separate Wi-Fi networks like IoT for example. This model also has 2 x 2.5 Gbps ports and 4 x 1Gb ports,s so plenty of capacity and also supports Dual WAN, for backup or aggregation. But one of the other great features is redundancy, in that is offers so many failover solutions for example you can tether your smartphone to the router to provide Wi-Fi access in the event of WAN failure. Before switching to the Flint 2, I had major issues with the TP-Link's actual Wi-Fi performance, especially on the IoT network I created for an exterior Wi-Fi camera. The signal was really weak, and nothing I did channel wise, or changing the angles of the 6 aerials made any difference. Having now set up the Flint 2 with only 4 aerials, it has made a HUGE difference to the signal quality and my camera went from barely a bottom bar to full bar signal strength instantly. Another brilliant feature is that you can start configuring many of the settings mini-saving as you go along (especially in the advanced LuCI interface) so you don't lose settings until you are ready to apply the whole configuration when complete, then Apply all the changes when you are confident you have everything set as you need it. The Flint 2 also comes withb Adguard that provides many security features included pre-populated site lists that you can instantly block with a single click, or selectively choose which ones you want to block. These are frequently maintained and updated. You can also monitor traffic and easily create your own blacklist. One other major benefit is that it supports a multitude of VPN services out the box, but because it has a decent Quad Core 2.0 GHz processor and 1 Gb ram, it can actually provide very fast (880 to 900 Mbps) speeds while using a VPN! The previous TP-Link I had was terrible and I was lucky to get 200-300 Mpbs on a good day. Device Reservation and filtering is easy to do and at the end of the day this thing just works. It has been a real joy to setup and use this with no issues whatsoever. If you're not a 'boy racer' that insists your router has to look like a bug out of Starship Troppers, but want a solid, well-built and fast Wi-F- 6 router that has endless configuration options, does what it says on the tin, then this is the one to go for. It also has a 2 year warranty when bought from Amazon or directly from GL.net, so peace of mind. Personally speaking, I really don't think you can get a better featured and performing router for the price.

Best in class
Another amazing GL.iNet product. It is safe to say this is the direct bigger brother of the GL-AXT1800, the Slate AX Wi-Fi 6 Travel Router i own in terms of the basic features, but it can do a whole lot more. FYI is uses the same GUI webpage for administration, so anyone with previous experience will have no issues. For starters the WiFi signal is nice and strong and more importantly stable thoughtout the day. Throughput is consistant and i have not noticed any real data drops. Whilst i cannot completely describe in details what i use the router for, I will say that the support for OpenVPN and WireGuard is the same reliable form as the travel router. As technical information only, if you were attempting to place yourself in a different country using vpn to obfuscate site and app country locks, this router will lock all traffic to the VPN tunnel only and not allow DNS leak, which is where most routers fail. This router runs in many modes, however its party trick (as with the GL-AXT1800) is acting as a repeater but using the Ethernet LAN uplink port (also you can used WiFi as either a primary or a secondary source (Backup to LAN)). This is where this router stands out as best of class in features as well as price point for devices in this class. If you are slightly interested in Tech and were looking for a router that has more features that you can shake a stick at this is the one to buy.

Uses ddwrt, accessed by luci in built in app.
Comes with dd wrt built in accessed through luci. Very good so far without touching too manh things. There are endless things to tinker with if thats your bag. Signal reaches all over my house with no issues. I installed cake and sqm. Which helps packet timing and prevents bursts, especially on fttp connections with pppoe (basically bt). Which helps with prevent lag in server based fps games and also goes some way to getting fair treatment from servers regarding lag compensation, something id struggled tremendously with over the last few years due to a tempermental xr500. Recommeneded for the likes of battlefield and warzone, there are countless nimber of optikns to add and tinker with which can help you with getting a fair game and decent consistent connection. Piece of cake and sqm is a must, ask chat gpt to help set it up, be observent and you cant go wrong. My games arent perfect but they are narrowing in with consistency. You can narrow out bad servers and block them by observing pack behaviour within luci, i havent done that yet as so far im satisfied with what i mentioned above. Recommended.

A brilliant piece of kit
I do a lot of streaming via apps on a Nvidia Shield TV Pro and decided to look for a router which could host a VPN client due to the consistently low VPN speeds I was experiencing on the Shield. With a 500 Mbps broadband service the best speed I could achieve on the Shield with the NordVPN app installed was 130 Mbps. Trial with a different VPN provider produced similar results. After some homework the thought was moving the VPN app from the Shield to a router could possibly resolve the issue so I bought the GL-MT6000 Flint 2 because along with most of the major VPN providers it natively supports NordVPN. The results were amazing, 475 Mbps on the Shield with NordVPN activated on the GL.iNet router. It also has Adguard Home built in and natively supports NextDNS, all in all just perfect for my needs and best of all it just works. For the price a surprisingly fast processor, loads of RAM with fully customisable firmware via a very intuitive interface. Fully recommended.
