Disappointing, feels like a rushed student essay.
This book has the feel of being written as some coursework where a word count had to be reached but the student had limited knowledge of the topic and was running out of time. The first two (thankfully fairly short) chapters are filler that explain what Structured Text is, and what PLCs are; it's unclear how one would find themselves on a position of needing to learn this language without some idea of it's purpose and the devices it runs on.The basic details of the language are explained reasonably well (variables, control structures, functions etc) with a few contrived examples but again with plenty of filler such as introductions and conclusions that say the same things.Where is book really falls down is the inverse relationship with the complexity of a topic and the level of useful information the book gives. Whilst the coverage of the basics is adequate, as the book moves onto more advanced topics the level of fluff and filler increases and the actual detail reduces to nothing. The chapter on Object Oriented support in ST briefly describes fundamental OO concepts, and then sprints through the use of these concepts in ST with minimal examples giving a wholly inadequate level of detail. When it comes to multithreading the entire chapter is fluff, briefly describing some general concepts of parallel execution but with zero details on how this is implemented in ST, not a single example is given.I am loathe to ever get rid of books, but this one will be going straight to a charity shop or the book recycling container.
