Recent cyber distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on the east coast have me a bit concerned and led me to some directed reading. Hackers can essentially disrupt and affect any modern infrastructure. Most people think it's just fantasy but these hackers turn the public's equiptment (routers, DVRs and IP security camera equiptment that are left with default logins - seems stupid I know but there are millions out there-) vulnerable to being remotely and automatically programmed to jam large servers. There is no fixing the device once it is hijacked and only removing it from its internet connection prevents it from doing its "botnet" work. Look it up. Scary stuff. My fears, if you will, are more related to cyber attacks of the power grid or even banking/financial world than actual EMPs etc. This book was definitely more than I expected for such a modest price! It contains practical and REAL world information on short and long term well being in the event of power outage. I lived through Katrina and I know know that extended loss of power is not just fantasy for me. I wish I had Jim LeBlanc's book years ago. It's a quick read and is well referenced with internet links to obtain or learn more about some of the items discussed in the various chapters. There chapter on obtaining clean water supply is particularly good and as a physician I can fully endorse the First Aid/Medical section (pp 30-35). The list of 9 essential antibiotics and their common usages and dosing is particularly useful. Multiple concise and practice lists of essential items to obtain BEFORE energency situations are included throughout the book are worth the cost of the book alone. Well done and thanks for making this information readily available to all of use for less than the cost of a sandwich!

From an engineering point of view -- it is very accurate and important to raise the Awareness Level of EMP ( Electro-Magnetic Pulse) dangers.The sun or an nuclear device can wipe out the power lines and transformers ( known as the GRID) of at least 3 US states for 4 to 5 days up to a possible maximum of 400 days of one big outage. -- See excellent and accurate government information at this web address [...], -- Also there are many other sources of information listed at the web site. Power companies are aware of the probable costly dangers but they do not want to spend any money until the government directs then to take protective expensive modifications.

Everyone should read how our grid is vulnerable to naturally occuring solar flares and man- made attacks, either cyber, physical or EMP.Consider: federal government, after mostly mothballing Cheyenne Mountain, has reserected it with almost $1billion to make it EMP protected. Meanwhile, little is being done to protect the citizenry. Estimates are 90 percent of citizenry will die as inter-connected systems i.e.electricity, water, sewage and food distribution will be seriously curtailed.

Received this book this morning and completed it this afternoon. Contains lots of good information for the days that will surely come to pass and for those of us who are less informed than we should be. Definitely a worthwhile read.

This was a thought-provoking book. It was written in a concise manner. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those in the electrical utility industry.
