Container Gardening
This is an excellent book which is written in a straightforward and easy to follow style. It contains a wealth of general information about planting. I particularly found the section which gives advice on selecting suitable planters very helpful. Prior to reading this book I would automatically have bought a planter if it was the right size and I liked the colour without really considering the needs of the individual plant concerned. Now I'm much more aware of the various types of planters/containers which are available on the market. Also the sections on pruning and propagating are extremely useful as they give step by step instructions and diagrams. It contains information and pictures of various insects in the garden which can cause damage to plants. Overall this is easily one of the best gardening books on the market. I've already learned so much from it and I will continue to refer to it for guidance as I only possess a very basic knowledge of plants.

Highly recommended
As a novice gardener I found this book excellent - easy to read, full of hints and tips and lots of lovely photos to inspire. I like that with this series of books you can choose which ones best suit your needs, without having to buy a huge expensive tome, most of which would be irrelevant. I know I will go back to this again and again, as it has ideas for every season - all in all a highly recommended, great value book.

Good but perhaps not for the absolute beginner
Good book with lots of solid advice but there are times when a complete beginner, such as myself gets a little lost. Terms like pinching tips are used but not explained, and I don't feel like there is a huge amount of discussion on caring for the plants once potted. A good place to start though.

Lovely set of books especially when you are a near beginner
Great set of books on different subjects eg gardening in the shade, perennials, container gardener. Great quality book in terms of the pages, photos and general print. Perfect for a beginner or someone needing some refresher reading. Would be lovely as presents too. And who doesn't love a bit of Alan Titchmarsh :-)

All the indexes use the latin names of all plants
Whilst this book was undoubtedly helpful, I found it very frustrating that the index was entirely in the latin format for each plant. As a complete beginner I had no idea that pansies were called violas and so on. After a lot of googling of latin names, I made headway at last. But whilst I understand that the author is a professional gardener, surely he doesn't expect everyone to know the latin names of the most common and popular plants. Rant over, it was definitely quite useful
