St Paul Trail

It met my expectations and more. I had just returned from Turkey and wondered how long a trek it had been for St. Paul. The book gave me a very good idea. An amazingly long walk.

The book begins with in typical guide book style: Turkish history, cultural norms, travelling suggestions and trekking tips. In the back are some key Turkish words and phrases to get by on. The majority of the book gives descriptions of the trail, along with water sources and possible campsites. The quality of the book varies from section to section; both in terms of writing and its accuracy in describing the trail. At times it seems that Kate and Terry get so caught up in describing the "stunning views" (a phrase they seem quite enamored with) that they neglect to actually "guide" you through the trail itself. My other complaint: each section gives an estimated "trekking time" that, in some cases, is a few hours off the mark. In spite of its shortcomings, the book leads you on a great adventure through a beautiful section of Turkey. The varied terrain and stunning villages are a must-see for an adventurous sort looking to really experience the people and culture of Turkey. The book may not be a stunning piece of literary genius, but it certainly gets the job done. Be sure to check Kate's website for updates on the trail.

Es ist das einzige Buch und im Internet ist über den Paulusweg auch nicht viel zu finden. Also muss man sich das Buch fast kaufen wenn man 2 Wochen in Großteils nur spärlich bewohnten Gebiet zu Fuß unterwegs ist.Ich kenne Bücher dieser Art da ich mich mit ähnlicher Literatur auch auf meine erste Transalp vorbereitet hatte. Hier wird aber auf englisch etwas viel drum herum geschrieben. Ich hatte mir eher eine Reisebeschreibung erwartet und das recht kurz und knapp. Die versprochenen GPS Tracks muss man dann über eine Webseite per Mail anfordern und bekommt dann keinen Track sondern eine Ansammlung von Wegpunkten. Ohne Software die daraus einen GPX Track macht also eher nutzlos. Dafür ist jeder Wegpunkt benannt, also Turn, Junction, Crossroads, Tree, Water, Old Mill etc... Ich habe mir aus den 1000ten Punkten die absolut sinnlosen heruasgelöscht und so zum erstellten Track noch ein paar gute Hinweise bekommen. Wichtig ist auf alle Fälle eine genaue Planung der Wanderung und dazu bietet das Internet fast genau so gute Informationen zu dem eher unbekannten Trail.Wer sich zum ersten Mail auf eine Reise dieser Art begibt sollte sich das Buch auf alle Fälle kaufen, für erfahrene Mehrtageswanderer ist außer den historischen Hintergrund nichts brauchbares dabei, da man den Track auch so im Internet findet.

Was die Beschreibung des Paulus-Weges taugt, sieht man erst, wenn man den Weg geht. Dann stellt man auch fest, wo der Weg unnötige Umwege macht. Vor allem kommt es darauf an, dass man die Markierungen findet. In der Theorie, also im Buch, kann man alles Mögliche schreiben.

Gute und hilfreiche Unterlage wenn man den St Pauls Weg laufen will.
