One of the best books on modern learning
I was unaware of Katie Martin before her book was called to my attention. After reading it, I rate it as one of the best books for those who want to know more about how to get past the outdated teacher-centered education system we have in the US and move toward a more authentic, learner-centered approach that prepares students for today's world. Katie lays out the case for why kids need a very different kind of education today. She then talks about the key changes in culture, philosophy and pedagogy that are needed. Numerous examples are included along the way that illustrate her points very well in practical terms. The story unfolds in a way that any educator who is committed to serving students should find compelling and informative. The challenge with "modern learning" has been that it really requires a major shift in pedagogy that includes many different changes that all reinforce each other to create an authentic, student-centered learning environment. So many teachers try to "improve on" the way they have done education for many years, making small incremental changes. That may yield some small advantages, but it can never lead to an environment that works equitably for all kids and helps them learn to think and problem solve as they need to do today. One simply cannot teach the traditional curriculum in the traditional way while adding elements for student-centered learning. It will be overwhelming and totally impractical. Yet making the big change in pedagogy is challenging when one has not experienced what the environment does for learning and engagement. Again, to make progress educators need to care enough about their students to get out of their comfort zone and play a very different role for their students. For anyone who cares enough to do it, this book is the best I have seen to provide a "how to" that can be followed. I strongly recommend it along with the book Timeless Learning, by Socol, Moran, and Ratliff, which is the best book on how to transform an entire district.

Wow, a very powerful read with tons of research to back up their understanding of education.
I love this book. The research information that the author gives backs up everything that our education system needs to change. Very thorough understanding of how to show true leadership in an ever changing world. Our educational systems must play catch up and continue to change and morph into a system that is in constantly keeping up with the world around us. It explains what educators already know, and that is education can not be stagnant. By the time the Department of education gives us standards to work on we must already be thinking of the next innovation in education. It is not a one and done system. It will look different in every school. It is not a one size fits all. We will never be done changing things and it is not a program that you buy, but it is a philosophy that is free for the taking.

Dr. Katie Martin inspires educators to put the learner 1st!
Learner Centered Innovation has inspired me to refocus my efforts on all learners. Dr. Katie Martin pushes against our conventional thinking as educators and asks practical questions about current institutional practices. Ultimately, conversations and mindsets come back to the learners in our schools. Dr. Martin also advocates for our teachers as learners and the importance of creating personalized learning experiences for their professional growth. As an educator of 21 years, I have held positions as a classroom teacher, learning coach, and principal. Learner Centered Innovation is a must read for any professional educator who wants to create an educational environment where the learner comes first.

Too much rah-rah, too little practical
The book could have been condensed to an introduction. Where are the practical methods and clear examples of how to engage children? This book seemed to fly above the day-to-day challenges. Saying you are going to motivate kids, spark their curiosity, and "unleash genius" is fine but how does one walk into a room of sullen middle schoolers and make the magic happen? What educators need is practical advice on how to prompt discussions, utilize Socratic techniques, set up interesting problems, find kids' interests & needs, and provide the care and support needed by the children. As a teacher with over 40 years of experience, I found this book to be hollow.

Martin has a sharp eye for making her content practical and useful. In particular
Few books in the K12 educational space have found the critical balance between practical and inspirational - this is one of those rare works that does both. Dr. Martin has a sharp eye for making her content practical and useful. In particular, she is adept at synthesizing both the current and historic underpinnings of the deeper learning movement while making those ideas relatable and actionable. I highly recommend this book.*Disclaimer, I am fortunate to work with Dr. Martin and her thoughtful approach to education is as consistent in person as it is in print.

What if school played to the strength of every child?
Thought provoking read by Dr. Katie Martin. One that puts me in a constant state of “What if?” I keep going back and rereading about VIDA... I am so moved by this. The culture... the common ties that bond by building together. This book has truly challenged my unfocused brain. I find myself going back to very real moments like this one. The take away that Katie left me with to the very end was why don’t schools play to the strengths of kids? Why? What if... ?
