Fantastic Cast Iron Dutch Oven!
I am absolutely thrilled with my Lodge L8DOLKPLT Cast Iron Dutch Oven! From its sturdy construction to its convenient dual handles, this 5-quart beauty has exceeded all my expectations. The pre-seasoned coating ensured that I could start cooking delicious meals right away without worrying about sticking or uneven heating. Plus, the size is perfect for a variety of dishes, from soups and stews to roasts and casseroles. The dual handles make it easy to transport, even when filled to the brim with piping hot food. Whether I'm cooking on the stovetop or in the oven, this Dutch oven distributes heat evenly and retains it superbly, resulting in perfectly cooked meals every time. Cleanup is a breeze thanks to the durable cast iron material, and I appreciate the versatility of being able to use it on any cooking surface, including induction cooktops. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this purchase. If you're in the market for a reliable and high-quality Dutch oven, look no further than the Lodge L8DOLKPLT. Highly recommended!

More great cast iron cookware
This review is for the 5-quart Dutch oven. It arrived nicely pre-seasoned. However, I always re-season new cast iron even if it's pre-seasoned by spreading a light film of canola oil with a paper towel and baking it a couple of hours at about 400 degrees. I did that a couple of times and then baked bread in it using the no-knead bread recipe. It turned out perfectly. I did use parchment paper to transfer the dough as many reviews of the bread recipe suggest, but I doubt the bread would have stuck even without the parchment. Well-seasoned cast iron is naturally non-stick. The 5-qt. size seems ideal for the bread recipe. Almost no clean-up is necessary, just rinse with hot water, dry thoroughly, and rub with a paper towel and a tiny bit of canola oil before storing. Store with the lid ajar. This cookware would also be great for anything that needs to be cooked slowly, and the 5-qt. size is probably large enough for the average family. Be sure it is well-seasoned before using it to cook very acidic things like tomatoes. I have a glass cooktop and have had no problems using cast iron on it. Cast iron is very heavy, so I'm careful to not drop or slide it. This Dutch oven is well made with smooth edges and a flat bottom. The lid fits very well. For cooking certain things there is nothing like cast iron. This item is made in the USA (Tennessee) and is reasonably priced at about a third of the current cost of the 7-qt. piece. I have a few of my mother's cast iron pieces, and I expect they along with my newer ones will be enjoyed by my children someday.

Fantasic value.... Beautiful and highly functional.
This is a true value. It does everything that the $300 LeCreuset does but costs about 15% of the fancy unit. Those if you that have used cast iron skillet for years will have no problems seasoning it, using it and caring for it. I don't know why it has taken me so long to get one. I have used it for baking sourdough bread and it's fantastic. I have used it for hot oil and frying tempura shrimp and vegetables. Fantastic. It holds the heat so we'll ... The oil temperature doesn't plunge when you add food like a common pot does. Ok, so the "pre-seasoning" that Lodge provides... It's not great. It essentially is a coating that prevents it from rusting in the warehouse. And the inside surface is rather rough. That means it will be harder to season and to clean and food will stick to it more. So.... You are going to need to season this yourself. It's not difficult and once you have done it, that's it. No more fuss. In addition, I would strongly recommend sanding the inside to a smoother finish. Get some 60 or 80 grit sandpaper. Not the cheap dollar store stuff. Good durable 3M or whatever. A quarter-sheet palm sander is appropriate. Focus on the bottom and the inside edge where the bottom transitions to the side. The center of the bottom will quickly get smooth... You dint want to overdo it. You don't want it SUPER smooth. You just want to take off most of the grainy "bumpy-ness". As the center of the bottom starts to get smooth, focus on the outer sections and the inside edge. You can put some effort into the sides as well but it's not as critical. You will probably need to change the sandpaper knce during the process. Now rinse it off well. Go to YouTube. Look up "season cast iron cowboy". There's a dude there with a cowboy hat that dies a good job of explaining the process. Essentially you heat the pot on the stove, coat the inside with oil, bake in a 350 degree iven for 45 minutes. Leave the pot in the oven a d met them both cool down to room temp. Do this three to four times. Each time it will get a little less silver color and more bronze color. When I made the sourdough bread, oven was at 550! For about an hour total including preheating. After that the inside was SOLID black.. no gummy surface, just perfectly black shiny seasoning. Despite what Lodge claims about their process... THIS is real seasoning that will set you up for a lifetime of cooking.

Great for use in the smoker
Durable, great size, quality cast iron Dutch oven. Great for use in the smoker. Use for smoked Mac and cheese, potatoes, queso. Will last forever as long as you care for it properly.

It does the job.
What more can be said for a $30 (at the time of purchase) cast iron dutch oven? It has the proper handles you would expect. Other models have lid handles on the sides, I prefer it on top. It's cast iron... it'll survive anything, and outlive you, and be passed on to your grandchildren, if you treat it right. It'll make the best food. It can be used on a stove, in an oven, on a fire, on or in coals, on a grill, and possibly in a volcano (but don't try it at home). What other cookware can that be said for, for $30? Oh, and the lid can be used on other cookware. And regular use of this dutch oven will build up your muscles and make you stronger. I prefer my cast iron pans to be machined, which is impossible to buy new these days, and I suppose a machined cast iron dutch oven would be superior. Failing that, this is as good as you can get. Possible other choices would include larger or smaller cast iron dutch ovens, depending on your need. Make sure never to wash this in a dishwasher or with soap. Use regular water only. Clean any oil with paper towels. Scrub with paper towels and kosher/sea salt. I dry my cast iron cookware by sticking it on the stovetop and blasting with heat until all the water is well gone. You may choose to oil it slightly before storing. To season it, rub thinly with an oiled paper towel (I like to do peanut oil), turn upside down, and blast in the hottest oven you can for an hour. Repeat again and again until you like the results. If there's any rust, it can be fixed with apple cider vinegar diluted with water (yes, it works!) After somewhere between several hours and several days, take a steel sponge to the rusted areas and it comes right off. After you fix it, make sure to store it better next time. Five stars because cast iron cookware offers no compromises, is very inexpensive, and lasts forever.

SO HANDY
I purchased this dutch oven just after Christmas and it did not disappoint. It has no defects and although it came pre-seasoned I re-seasoned just once to be certain. I have cooked so many different meals in it already I use it easy every 3rd to 4th day for something. I like the size as I can do a lot of batch cooking, and stocks. I use it for Rice and Beans, large cuts of meats, small chickens, and duck. I have used it for deep frying and just recently butter chicken. It really is a workhorse. Ive had no problems with its seasoning, if your concerned about it do look up how to properly care for cast iron, it should help you. Yes it is very heavy, when its filled it is even more so, it's an 8qt Cast Iron Pot and I didnt expect anything less. All around Im happy to have finally bought myself a great quality dutch oven.

Great Dutch over for stove or oven.
Brilliant product. I have a couple of lodge frying pans and grill plate. I won't use anything else. This was great for a slow cook on the stove. The heat seems to spread fairly evenly with not real burn spots (depends on flame intensity). I love Lodge products.

I only choose lodge
Cast iron is the best cookware to use according to specialists due to the fact that it is safe and adds iron to the food (fact). Lodge is one of the best brands for Cast iron cookware. Needs some care.
