Ya need to use a wrench to hold it in place or it will move as you spread the strut receiver, hence the 2 flats on the tool.

This item works.
It worked but im not sure it would survive another set of asian mk4 gti knuckles. It took a beating. Struts went on tho. So 5 stars it gets.

Used to do a coilover install on a vw passat. This tool made the job a breeze and easily opened up the knuckle pinch point.

This is a very handy little tool!
I have a number of cars with knuckle castings that pinch the round strut body, and this Orion Motor Tech Strut Spreader Tool goes right in the little gap, after you've removed the pinch bolt, and opens up the knuckle pinch just enough so it slides right off the strut body, no hammering needed. It's very durable and well made of good materials. Orion needed to make this 30 years ago.
