Have used this mat daily for several months with no issues or problems. This mat is opened and closed daily to use as a base for a roll up mattress that gets put away in the closet each morning. There has been no tears but a couple small loose fibers here and there. Love the real grass smell! If you are looking for this style of japanese floor mat then look no further! Don’t be confused, this is not a Japanese tatami mat. It is a tatami like area rug. I was aware of this before my purchase so it doesn’t affect my review.Soft enough to do yoga or PT exercises on, but not thick and soft enough to comfortably sleep on with a single futon on top. Stacking two futons will give you both the support and softness of a Japanese tatami.There is a faint smell of the rush grass but it will subside over a short period of time.Recommendations:*Don’t walk on it with outdoor shoes*If vacuuming, move your vacuum in the direction of the weaving.*Do not put furniture on top of itEnjoy it for what it is. Exactly what I wanted. Authentic fresh tatami smell when opened. Works great for my Japanese themed room. Since it’s a thin mat, not like a real tatami, I added a baby cushion mat underneath it and it feels great now.

It does what its meant to do, but as a warning, it smells like a horse stable. Not sure why, but smell is pretty bad.

It stunk up my place the first day but the smell's going away and isn't really that bad because I slept like a rock on this thing. It went away after I left it outside for a few hours. Folding and putting this thing away is a blessing since it takes up less space than it does on the floor. It's a perfect level of thick and firm for me to get comfy and is really nice on your back. Would rate 5 stars if it didn't have such a powerful IAMS dog food smell

I always wanted a tatami room and recently decided to convert the “living room” of my tiny studio into one. These mats arrived quickly and in perfect condition. At first they will have a strong hay odor but that fades and becomes very subtle over time. Certainly better than the chemical odor of carpeting. They clean easily with a soft broom (do NOT run a vacuum over them) and seem sturdy and well-constructed.

My sleep quality greatly improved after switching over from a traditional bed to this setup. I also enjoy the fact that I can just fold it up and store it away. There is a smell to it but it fades away with time.

I like the natural smell not sure if it’s natural but it seems to work pretty well. My futon doesn’t slip and it’s just been on the base of my adjustable bed and adjust well. Doesn’t move out of place.
