Cowboys & Aliens

Just a good popcorn movie ... it's sci-fi so leave reality at the door. Good cast, likeable and cringey unlikeable characters for good storytelling. Very good, not great ... but it doesn't have to be.

This is one of my favorite unexpectedly good movies. With a name like Cowboys and Aliens it’s easy to pass this one by, but it actually has a believable plot, blends cowboys, sci-fi, action and aliens into an interesting story with great acting.

In a case of buyer beware, I would have to say that I'm disappointed in this release of an awesome movie, and it's all my fault. I just saw "Cowboys & Aliens 4K UHD" and clicked Buy Now. I love this movie. As a fan of westerns and science fiction alike (and a lot of science fiction can find its roots in westerns), it's just such a fun romp with a great cast and a story that bounces right along, keeping the viewer engaged. However, I was very disappointed to learn that (a) there is no digital code included in this particular release, and (b) it says 4K UHD & Blu-Ray, which, to me, implied that one is getting the same thing on 4K UHD and Blu-Ray BUT... You are getting the THEATRICAL CUT ONLY on 4K UHD and the EXTENDED CUT ONLY on Blu-Ray. I don't understand this. It's strange to me, to include two different cuts in two different formats. If I'm buying a 4K UHD release, I want everything I can get out of it, so I don't understand mixing up the cuts onto two different formats. I was pretty disappointed by that. That being said, I can stand to get up from my couch now and then to change the disc, so I can live without the digital code, and I often find extended cuts to be a bit bloated, so I can live with a 4K UHD theatrical cut... But basically, I was expecting a little bit more for the price. All I got out of this really was one 4K UHD theatrical cut... no digital, no 4K UHD extended cut... and as a movie collector, I find that disappointing. Still, the movie rocks. I've met so many people who just don't get it. I don't know why. The movie rocks. A+ for the movie, the video and sound on the 4K version, etc. Stellar cast, great effects, lots of fun. Love it.

I don't care for the main guy in other movies but he is excellent in this real different alien movie but has some points like the gold that is usually in alien stuff gold for energy great movie

I like this film. Loving it is not an option but it is entertaining. I'm a sucker for gritty westerns and this one get's awfully gritty for a western based SF spectacle. It's not as grandly episodic as it could have been. It's weird too because the cast does a fine job (Ford and Craig are not wasted in the least) and the FX is top notch. Where it falls a bit flat is the final fight and oddly lacking sense of resolution. With what everyone's been through, the death, trauma and revelation of life from other worlds, to return to life as usual, just feels a bit pat, uninspired. Yes, some people have changed for the better. They have a softer edge for the experiences shared but that just didn't feel like it was enough. The pace is decent enough and there's room for wonder and humanity in the effort. It just could have been more. Maybe it's the premise and how it was handled by way of the machine that is Hollywood production standards. It's still fine and fun and, for me, worth owning. I won't say I could have done better.
