Seconds: A Graphic Novel (Original Fiction)

Bryan Lee O'Malley is back with another witty, humorous, and beautiful graphic novel.
It's been four years since the final volume of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit graphic series, Scott Pilgrim, was released. Now he has graced us again with stand-alone story 'Seconds'. Katie is a chef whose life seems to be going great until one day turns everything bad. However she can make everything the way she wants it, revise her bad day, when a mysterious house spirit allows her a single mushroom. The rules are simple: 1) Write your mistake, 2) Ingest one mushroom, 3) Go to sleep, 4) Wake anew. However, greedy to make things absolutely perfect, Katie starts breaking the rules and she falls into a mess of strange alternate worlds where a dark shadow stalks her dreams. Returning after too long O'Malley brings together all the things that made Scott Pilgrim so ingenious and adds more to create a new story well worth reading. The art is adorable, the characters are a hilarious delight, the story is haunting, and the mix of fantsasy and reality creates a world you can't help but get pulled into. If you enjoyed Scott Pilgrim you should definitely pick up Seconds. If you haven't read Scott Pilgrim then Seconds is still most certainly worth your time (and when you've finished it aslo go read Scott Pilgrim). Bryan Lee O'Malley back at his best, this graphic novel is most definitely desrving of the rating I'm giving it. Five stars, buy it now!

Seconds
Seconds is the highly anticipated eighth published graphic novel from Bryan lee O'Malley, creator of the simply amazing Scott Pilgrim series. His first story since finishing the Pilgrim saga, Seconds follows a woman named Katie who is on the cusp of turning 30. A successful restaurant owner who desires more out of her already good life who is given the chance to do so by being able to change one event in her life when she eats a special mushroom. However as Katie manages to posses more mushrooms she begins to abuse this power in pursuit of the perfect life.Whereas Scott Pilgrim was a coming of age story, Seconds is more of a midlife crisis story and therefore would most likely go down with a slightly more mature audience better than the Pilgrim books and Lost at Sea.Filled with life lessons, humour and just a little bit of sex, Seconds is a great new graphic novel from one of the industry's best.

A worthy successor, yet something distinct
Unlike Lost At Sea, which felt like it only sold on the author's name, Seconds is truly a good book that stands on its own as a solid story, that is more than worth reading if you enjoyed Scott Pilgrim. It is not a retread of Scott Pilgrim, the plot is actually fairly original, the characters are likable and the ending is satisfying, yet there's still some of the same kind of humour you'd expect.I can't really think of any flaws at all, this story was solid in every area, was well paced and surprisingly deep. Would recomend to any Scott Pilgrim fan

Great gift; no dust jacket.
Bought as a gift for someone who's starting to read the Scott Pilgrim series, just getting into Bryan Lee O'Malley's work. The book is, unquestionably, absolutely great. I'd really recommend it - it's very 'coming-of-age-after-being-of-age', as most of O'Malley's works are. The book came in good condition, just TINY bit battered, like I'd already had it on my shelf, and (disappointingly) no dust jacket, however it retails for 19.99 and I got it for £7 so im not really complaining. Good value for the price.

A funny and oddly ‘local’ feeling story. Highly recommended!
If you’ve read any Bryan Lee O’Malley before, you’ll know what you’re getting into. This is a fun little story of a chef struggling to make the dream of her own restaurant come true, sent on a spiralling adventure as she suddenly gains access to the ability to change past decisions; but at what cost?Highly recommended to graphic novel readers new and old!

Great read, kept trying to put it down but ...
Great read, kept trying to put it down but couldn't help but pick it back up again and again!Good artwork, all looks nice and the colours are never too distracting but compliment the scenes well. While the layout is awesome, little bits like how the floor plan for Seconds is laid out for you to see just make it really easy to get involved in this book.So yeah pick this book up if you want a good read

The best american graphic novel ever?
This book is so great. Its a treat for the eyes. The story is great and gripping, characters are well rounded and written really well and the art style is really fitting with the story. I think Bryan Lee O'Mally may have trumped his Scott Pilgrim franchise. Praying for this to be turned into a film, and secretly holding out for a sequel!

Best story and coloring ever. I love O'Malley's art is so asdfghjkl xd, the story is very engaging due to the paranormal and normal stuff.I thought it would be a bit damaged cos the price was pretty cheap but it was like it was new.

when someone recommended Seconds to me
If you know Scott Pilgrim, then you know then you’ve already been introduced to Bryan Lee O’Malley, however, when someone recommended Seconds to me, I was curious. In many ways, this standalone comic is a stunning, complex, and contemporary graphic novel that is woven with great storytelling and a graphic style that appeals to a wide range of readers.Katie Clay, the main character is a chef who runs a hip and popular restaurant. Her vision is to open another restaurant with a new vision, a new idea, and a new start. She feels like she is in limbo as she looks forward but feels trapped in her current life. When she sulks in her bedroom, one night, she finds a strange and foreboding box in her dresser. She opens the box and finds a kit for undoing her bad decisions. Step one: write down your error in the little notebook. Step two: eat a mysterious red mushroom. Step Three: go to sleep and when you wake up, your life is changed. Sounds simple. Katie is a successful professional, but not the most mature, friendly, kind person. While most of the time, her missteps and regrets are minor, she begins to think that the box in her dresser can change all that. Before things get too far out of hand, she meets the “house spirit” who warns her that she should not be meddling her past as it will certainly have grave impacts. This graphic novel even breaks the fourth wall, in a playful, innovative vision of storytelling. The art work, retains O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim style, but it is enhanced in some unique and focused storytelling areas. Described as a manga-style, it is the artistic vision of this comic that makes it different, compelling, and better than some of the other time altering stories. It is about an empowered woman who wants to change parts of her life and win her vision of her life, but with it comes the sacrifice of those specific changes. The good news, this is not Ground Hog Day, in fact, O’Malley is much more innovative and fresh with the idea of possessing god-like powers to undo mistakes. Katie is well crafted artistically and narratively in that she would appeal to a teenager or an adult equally. While the character is illustrated in an O’Malley style that makes her seem young, she has the life and sass of an adult. Pushing the character to cover that much space allows more people to identify with the protagonist. Katie sometimes feels like a bossy seventeen year-old, but she also has the responsibility and the vision of her adult self. This is a graphic novel that will draw you in. You will want to finish it in one sitting, even though you know you should slow down and savor it a bit. There are a lot of different elements to like here, colorful and dynamic art work, compelling storytelling, and a time shifting story that is innovative and fun to read.

An instant classic
Seconds follows Katie, a woman that's found success as the head chef at the Seconds restuarant. Despite that success, Katie feels her life isn't turning out the way she wants, so when she discovers a mushroom that lets her change the past she sets off to make her life perfect.O'malley has a talent for writing loveably flawed characters and Katie is at times selfish, neuortic and overly entitled but also endearing in the sense that she just wants all her problems to be solved so she can be happy.Seconds has some wonderful commentary on the value of working through your problems, earning the things you want and that sometimes there are no "right" decisions. The artwork is simple but effective and the book is nice and thick. I would recommend this to just about anyone that even has the remostest interest in graphic novels. It's very accessible and a good read for everyone.
