Inland Empire [Blu-ray]

Wow! I’ve just finished watching this twice; what a unique, rich and spellbinding creation this is!The plot starts with the idea of a person apparently living the ideal dream (the Western version anyway!) that we are all taught to aspire to; with the trappings of success, fame, beauty and fortune - everything you would expect to make a human happy....mmm, however!As the film starts fairly conventionally plot wise, however, the acting scenes and the apparent reality soon become suffused & difficult to separate (we are all acting out parts on the stage of life). As the film continues, the viewer is thrown into the experience of a fearful, confusing, disjointed dream world, with horror and imagery that the linear mind cannot grasp or comprehend - generating great fear & confusion.Basically, Lynch is taking the viewer on a film version journey of the process of ‘waking up’ from the conventional dream of life and opening your eyes to true reality - one that the mind can never understand, but one can know deeply by being present and knowing with the heart.This is a classic tale of spiritual awakening/enlightenment, where one embarks on a journey of waking from the illusion; classically done by practising meditation, mindfulness and awareness to the every day processes of a life - mainly dominated by your thoughts and ‘monkey mind’, hypnotised into believing they are the actor the play in the story, determined to repeat continuously (samsara, karma, reincarnation and the wheel of life), causing continued suffering.As the character/actor continues on this journey of discovery, they start to wake up and realise that life and reality are very different from that linear time bound conditioned mind story (opinions, judgements & concepts)and the ego mind cherishes and holds on tightly to, defending to the death (responsible for conflict & war). As can be seen in the film, this initially generates great fear, confusion and increased suffering to the character.On the way, (in the film and on the spiritual path) one has to meet the shadow self and face every deep terror and horror imaginable, deep down in our psyche (The Phantom character); representing those parts we all hate, suppress and deny about ourselves, and ‘psychologically project’ into others and the world through hate and anger. However, upon passing through this phase (The Hero’s Journey), one is awakened to the reality of it all being unreal, with nothing to truly fear. It’s the big illusory play of life on the screen of conscious awareness (note the repeated use of screens in the film).The film concludes the journey with samadhi, nirvana, enlightenment, a spiritual awakening being realised, where the grand illusion is seen once and for all, with no true separation and oneness, with suffering, even being seen as ultimately unreal (ego death). All created and experienced by the knower on the screen of conscious awareness, where the real Self is the silent untouchable observer of the screen of experience, realising that they are not all that which they are observing. The various characters and scenes represent the various psychic manifestations, such as previous lives, the subconscious, collective archetypes and various energies 7 collective pain that exist deep within (Rabbits, Polish characters & various manifestations of Dern). Enlightenment being ultimately achieved, the observer of the screen realises that all is well and has always been well, despite the apparent horrific experiences on the screen. Ultimately, there is no true death to the Self - reaching a state of true reality, bliss and oneness.It’s amazing how such a deep and precious film has got onto the big screen and out of the modern Hollywood commercial machine. I understand that it can initially seem highly confusing and all over the place, so don’t expect a typical film with a start, middle and end. Don’t be put off with the seeming confusion and try to grasp it as a typical linear story - just let it soak into your awareness and absorb into your sub conscious, and that part of you which ‘knows’, as it will have an effect. If this film has got your curiosity going, check out meditation techniques, mindfulness, non duality, Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta, Taoism, Transcendental Meditation and other ancient teachings, to compare the concepts of the teachings with the film contents.Well done & thank you deeply for creating this much needed beautiful masterpiece David!

First of all, if you're new to David Lynch's recent work - in other words, if you haven't seen and enjoyed Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, then INLAND EMPIRE probably isn't for you.As the other reviews show, even some hard-line Lynch fans seem to have been disappointed by this movie.In fact, I was one of them, the first time I saw it. One other reviewer said that he even found it dull - something he'd never expected from a Lynch movie. This was also my own first reaction.But it's worth sticking with it. It's genuinely not the meaningless hotch-potch it may appear on a first viewing. Each time you see it, another piece of the jigsaw falls into place - though you may find that the jigsaw makes a picture a little more abstract than you expected. But hey, it's a David Lynch movie, and that's part of the fun.Personally I enjoy these movies in much the same way as I might enjoy the lyrics to a Bob Dylan song, or looking at an abstract painting: you may not be sure you quite 'get' it, but it can still be an interesting and enjoyable experience.The first time I watched this, after the first 2 hours it started to seem insanely long and dull. The second and subsequent viewings, the time flew past and I found it totally gripping.And as for Laura Dern... what a revelation!!! I've enjoyed her movies in the past, but she never struck me as a truly great actress. But in this... wow. If there was any justice in Hollywood, she would definitely be getting a Best Actress award. But there isn't, and this is a David Lynch movie, so she won't. Pity.

An aspiring actrees finds herself trapped in the plot of a cursed Polish movie's remake she's starring in.Chased through different settings and universes by a malevolent entity known as The Phantom, her story collides with others, each one with it's own protagonists; A sitcom starring a family of depressed antropomorphic rabbits who constantly talk about time, a group of eastern hookers (who may be living either in the present or in the past), murderous wives and a lonely girl trapped inside an abandoned hotel room.David Lynch's Ambitious and apparently final movie is a sure treat for fans of the surreal and darkly unsettling universe created by the director's earlier works, filled with trademarks and references, Inland Empire pushes the envelope even further than Eraserhead, right into the subconscious of the viewer; especially for the open-minded to this particular kind of experience.The plot itself, highly confusing actually, sometimes feels nothing else but an excuse for Lynch's pleasure to showcase his most loved elements; double identities, dancing women, stroboscopic lights, scary glares, smoke and anything included in his Manual of the Weird, but is indeed a great example of self-celebrative cinema; a resume of Lynch's journey through filmmaking; not pretentious at all but a dazzling and unexpected essay of its own.The blu ray comes packed with all kind of extras mostly focusing on Lynch's persona rather than the actual making of; various interviews with the director and a documentary on his gallery of paintings in Paris; a sure treasure for the Lynch aficionados but the lack of several features available in the US edition like "More Things That Happened" a selection of deleted scenes, is certainly the biggest flaw of the Uk version (which is also why I didn't rate the product with 5-stars)The image is presented in 1080p and despite the source material being shot with a digital handheld Sony camera (not exactly the best in image definition) the picture and sound are truly captivating and immersive; High Definition brings an all-new dimension for the movie; very little grain, great colour depth and detailed contours that perfectly renders the onirical visions shown on screen.What else can be said about it? This edition is certainly the best so far in Europe to fully enjoy this masterpiece of the bizarre; however if you're looking for the Ultimate IE experience I suggest you to buy the US edition (don't know if it's available in blu ray though) or wait for a proper R2 version to be released.

This has become my favorite David Lynch film. It showed me how to enjoy the journey of an experience rather than needing a concrete story that is entirely explained by the end.Of course my opinion is subjective, as anyone’s is. But like life where you are the casual observer of strangers on your day to day. You don’t know their whole stories, but you witness them and form opinions about them anyway. This is like that but at a more intimate level of observation.I felt a range of emotions and opinions watching this, and by the end, when I found myself thoroughly enjoying the final musical number of the credits: I realized at some point I let go of my expectations of narrative at took the moments as they came. I’m glad, and better for it, I think.In retrospect, this movie helped me be more open to the works of David Lynch I had seen prior to Inland Empire. The films I had seen while still in the mindset of needing a visual narrative to be told in a specific way with anticipated information fulfilled by the end.Let go of expectations and take in one step of the journey at a time.

*** Mehr Interpretation als Rezension, entsprechend sei hiermit vor Spoilern gewarnt ***Der Verrat der Bilder'Der Verrat der Bilder' ist eines der ganz großen Bilder des Surrealismus, es ist ein Schlüsselwerk in dem Wandel von der Modernen zur Postmodernen Malerei. René Magritte durchbrach mit dem Bild(ern, besser noch kam die Idee in Les deux mystères zur Geltung) gleich mehrere Ebenen zwischen Künstler, Werk und Rezipient. Neben der offensichtlichen Erkenntnis, dass ein Bild stets ein Bild ist und ein noch so natürlich abgebildetes Objekt eben nicht zu dem Objekt selbst wird. Andererseits zerschlägt Magritte auch die Ebene der Identifikation über Sprache. Wenn das Abgebildete nicht das abbildet was es abbildet, was bildet es dann ab? Wenn also die Pfeife keine Pfeife darstellt, was stellt sie dann dar? Die Wirklichkeit zerfällt damit und wird absolut subjektiv. Eine Interpretation wird unmöglich, das das was da abgebildet ist KEINE Pfeife ist.Die Bilder täuschenEin Kunstgriff dessen sich Lynch nun bedient indem er mehrere Filmebenen einführt Der Film 'Inland Empire' (1) handelt von den Dreharbeiten zu "On High in Blue Tomorrows" (2), der Nikkis (Laura Dern) großer Comback werden soll. "On High in Blue Tomorrows" entpuppt sich dabei als Remake des tragisch durch den Tod der Hauptdarsteller gescheiterten "4-7" (3). Unterdessen wird die filmische Erzählung von einer jungen Prostituierten eingeleietet die sich eine Hasen-Sidcom im Hotelfernsehen anschaut(4). Die immer wieder eingespielten Hasenepisoden sind sehr ruhig fast stagnierend, aber dabei stets von einem bedrohlichen Unterton der sinnentleerten Dialoge, des dröhnenden Hintergrundklangs und der völlig zusammenhangslos eingespielten Konservenlacher.Die Ebene der Hauptrollen und Hauptfiguren löst sich derweil auf Sue/Nikki (mir fehlt hier eigentlich ein Augenblick in dem sie noch mit Laura angesprochen wird) sind beide mit dem gleichen eifer- und rachsüchtigen Mann Piotrek Krol (Der Nachname ist eine Anspielung auf Kaninchen) gespielt von Peter J. Lucas verheiratet. Sie beginnen beide eine Affäre. Das Ausmaß an Rückgriffen und Überschlägen von Film zu Film zu Film zu Film zu Film ist dabei so undurchsichtig, dass man sich eine Zeichnung anlegen müsste um die unterschiedlichen Handlungsstränge und -ebenen, die derweil noch aggressiv ineinandergreifen aufzuschlüsseln. Stellt sich allerdings die Frage ob das nötig ist? Ist es nicht.Dies ist keine PfeifeInland Empire ist kein regulärer handlungsbasierter linearer Film. Mehr noch als bei Lost Highway und Mulholland Drive ist Inland Empire eine Psychogram über Ängste, Schuldgefühle, Innere Zerrissenheit und Wut. Lynch fertigte kein normales Drehbuch an, er schrieb die Szenen einzeln direkt vor den Dreharbeiten und fragmentierte den Dreh und verhinderte das Entstehen einer eindeutigen Handlung, weder die Schauspieler noch er selbst wussten genau wohin die Reise geht. Zumindest wenn es dabei um die Handlungsebene geht blieb diese hier sehr weit außen vor. Sie war Lynch nicht wichtig. Anfang und Ende sind hier klar als emotionale Zustände der Hauptfigur auszumachen. Die Anfangs unsichere und ängstliche Nikki geht durch eine Reihe von Tiefpunkten bis hin zu Depersonalisation und Persönlichkeitsabspaltungen um am Ende Glücklich zu sich zu finden. So zerbrochen und zerschlagen der Film auf die Zuschauer wirkt, so zerbrochen und zerschlagen ist Nikkis psychosoziale Verfassung. Die immer wieder auftauchenden Prostituierten, der im Hotelzimmer mit bzw. um Nikki/Sue diskutierende Chor, Sue, die Hasen, all das ist Nikkis Innenleben auf der Suche nach einem stabilen Selbst. Das der Film (Inland Empire) dabei von einer weinenden Prostituierten intoniert wird, markiert den emotionalen Punkt von welchem die Handlung beginnt. Nikki ist nicht nur Verzweifelt, sie fühlt sich ausgenutzt, missbraucht, verlassen, einsam und gequält. Ihr Selbstwert ist dahin. So kann man diesen Film und alle Filme in diesem Film vielleicht nicht verstehen, aber sicher erfühlen. Während Lost Highway und Mulholland Drive noch Anfang und Ende und mit ein wenig analytischen Gespür auch eine klare Handlung besitzen, besitzt Inland Empire zwar ein Ende und verweist auf viele kleine Stationen die zu diesem Ende führ(t)en, aber keine klare Handlung mehr. Es geht hier nur noch um das Gefühl und um die Tiefe Verzweiflung. An diesem Punkt ist Inland Empire die Konsequenz aus Lynchs surrealsten Filmen (Eraserhead, Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive) und die Klimax seiner Erzählkunst. So verwundert es vielleicht auch nicht, dass Lynch hier -ganz Post-Moderne- immer wieder auf sich selbst und sein Œuvre verweist. Von der Schauspielerwahl (Laura Dern) über die Musik (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks) zu unterschiedlichsten Film- und Serienfiguren oder -settings die angedeutet werden. Alles in allem nimmt Lynch sich mit diesem Film auch die Möglichkeit sein eigenes Werk und seine Bedeutung in der Filmbranche zu reflektieren. Dass dabei die große Halle, die immer wieder im Film auftaucht und die den Raum für unterschiedlichste Darbietungen von Gefühlen dient die Halle seines Hauses ist, mag dem Budget geschuldet sein, scheint aber nicht gerade Bar jeder Ironie:Hollywood sieh her! Dies ist die Zukunft des Films.Lynch zumindest war und ist davon überzeugt, dass er besonders in der Herangehensweise des intuitiven Drehbuchs und der locker sitzenden DV-Cam ein zukunftsweisendes Werk geschaffen hat. Ob das nun Hybris oder die Wahrheit ist, entscheidet letztendlich jeder für sich selbst. Blockbustertauglich erscheint beides auf den ersten Blick allerdings nicht. Das Lynch aber durch die Lande reiste und große Teile seines Privatvermögens investierte um Laura Dern eine Nominierung für den Oscar zu ermöglichen, woran er allerdings ohne großes Studio im Nacken scheiterte, zeigt vielleicht wie überzeugt er selbst von seinem Film und seinen Schauspielern war. Natürlich liebt Lynch seine Akteure, er liebt ausdrucksstarke Gesichter die sich bis zum clownesken Verzerren lassen, er liebt ganz bewusst eingesetztes Overacting, er liebt das Drama und das große Bild. Er liebt diese Dinge so sehr, dass man sich fragen kann warum Lynch überhaupt noch mit Dialogen dreht und nicht surreale Stummfilme mit Texttafeln und radikal-expressiv bis surrealer Musik unterlegt. Von dieser Warte aus muss man ihm vielleicht entgegenhalten, dass sein Werk mit Sicherheit Post-Modern und mit Sicherheit auch Radikal ist, aber es ist eben auch Anachronistisch. Es ist eher die post-moderne Fortführung einer in den USA fast schon vergessenen Filmtechnik. Anders sieht es hingegen in Asien aus, der japanische Film strotzt nur so von ähnlichen Ideen. Hier wird Lynchs Werk, wie schon das Werk der Surrealisten zu einem Schlüsselmoment der Kunst selbst.Absoluter Realität"Ich glaube an die künftige Auflösung dieser scheinbar so gegensätzlichen Zustände von Traum und Wirklichkeit in einer Art absoluter Realität, wenn man so sagen kann: Surrealität. Nach ihrer Eroberung strebe ich, sicher, sie nicht zu erreichen, zu unbekümmert jedoch um meinen Tod, um nicht zumindest die Freuden eines solchen Besitzes abzuwägen" Andre BretonIm zweite Satz des Breton-Zitats liegt der wahre Schlüssel um den Surrealismus als Bindeglied zwischen Moderner (Psychoanalyse) und Post-Moderner (Lyotard) zu verstehen. "sicher, sie nicht zu erreichen" die Idee ist von Beginn an zum scheitern verurteilt, Traum und Wirklichkeit prallen aufeinander und lassen sich schon an jenem Punkt an welchem man versucht die Wirklichkeit zu definieren nicht zusammenbringen. Die Surrealität verharrt dadurch in der Darstellung des Traums, des Gefühls, des Unterbewussten, nur gelegentlich gespickt mit Verweisen auf das subjektiv Reale, dass vermeintlich in einem Sinnzusammenhang von Irrealem und Realem steht. Diesen Sinnzusammenhang ließ Lynch in seinen früheren Werken stets noch mehr als hier erahnen. Die Abtreibung in Eraserhead, der Mord in Lost Highway oder die verschmähte Liebe in Mulholland Drive. Auch in Inland Empire werden die Ursachen für Nikkis Ängste herausgearbeitet, aber mehr als in seinen früheren Werken nähert sich Lynch hier der traumhaften Darstellung an ohne viel Auflösung anzubieten. In einem Sammelsurium aus Gefühlsfacetten sind es keine katharisch von Schuld reinigenden Visionen des Szenarios "Vater siehst Du nicht, dass ich brenne". Inland Empire greift viel tiefer und dabei in eine weit weniger extreme emotionale Stressphase ein. Hier sind nicht Todesstrafe oder Suizid als ein zentraler Augenblick auszumachen, hier reinigt sich die Hauptfigur langsam von den Schatten ihrer Selbst. Ob man sich die drei Stunden derweil mehrfach ansehen mag um diesen schweren Prozess zu begleiten, dass sei jedem selbst frei gestellt. Allerdings in der Darbietung der von Breton angemahnten absoluten Realität als Bindeglied zwischen Unterbewusstsein und Bewusstsein nähert sich Inland Empire dieser wohl nebst Eraserhead am stärksten.(K)Eine (Handlungs)AnalyseLynch selbst kommentierte sein Werk wie folgt: "Die meisten Filme sind ganz einfach zu verstehen. Aber ich erzähle nicht bloß Geschichten, sondern arbeite mit Abstraktionen. Das Kino kann die Zuschauer in eine Welt jenseits des Intellekts entführen, in der sie sich ganz und gar ihren eigenen Intuitionen anvertrauen müssen. Es geht nicht darum, etwas zu verstehen, sondern darum, etwas zu erfahren."(Im Spiegelinterview) Sein Entwurf für den Umgang mit Inland Empire, sowie mit seinen vorherigen abstrahierenden Filmen zerreißt die Erwartungshaltung eines Teils seines Publikums. Diejenigen die wie Puzzlekönige wieder und wieder vor Lynchfilmen saßen und die Filme wie gigantische Kopfnüsse zu knacken suchten stehen nun vor einem unlösbaren Enigma. Aber es gibt dennoch ein Kernthema in diesem Film, dass wenn auch nicht direkt gezeigt so doch zentral in diesem Spinnennetz aus Eindrücken liegt. Hier ist der Ehebruch das Bindeglied auf welchen sich alle noch so kleinen Facetten des Films beziehen lassen.Nikki sieht durch ein in ihre Unterwäsche gebranntes Loch in die Zukunft. Noch offensichtlicher Symbole kann man kaum noch bemühen um darauf hinzuweisen, dass hier Sexualität als Ursache für Destruktion aber die Destruktion auch als Chance begriffen werden kann. Es tauchen immer wieder Prostituierte auf, die mal schwach und zerschlagen, mal stark und selbstbewusst in Erscheinung treten. Auch hier wird wieder die Rolle der Frau ausgehend von einer Definition über ihre Sexualität, denn eine Prostituierte wird als solche über die Sexualität definiert. Soweit wird das inhaltliche Konzept des Films schon wie Lynch sagt erfahren und im gleichen Spiegelinterview merkte er etwas dazu an, dass am prophetisch als Wert des Films sehen kann:"Ich glaube aber, die Zuschauer verstehen von "Inland Empire" viel mehr, als sie selber ahnen."Ja, vermutlich. Die allesentscheidende Frage scheint dabei zu sein, ob sich die Zuschauer auf das verstandene als Film einlassen wollen. Hier versagt die klassische Werkanalyse, hier versagt die Suche nach der linearen Handlung, hier geht es nur noch um die Fragen "Wer bin ich?", "Wer möchte ich sein?" und besonders "Was bin ich mir selbst wert?" von einer Frau gestellt die aus einer kaputten Beziehung mit einem eifer- und rachsüchtigen Mann, wahrscheinlich auch einem äußerst gewalttätigen Mann sich in den Ehebruch flüchtete und (vorerst) nicht in die Trennung. "Die Frau in Schwierigkeiten", ist am Anfang des Films noch zu weit von sich selbst entfernt um selbstbewusst und allein auf sich gestellt ihrer Wege zu gehen. Erst am Ende des Films kehrt Harmonie und damit Identität ein. Das Über-Ich (Konvention) und das Es (Emotion/Trieb) finden zueinander und Inland Empire schließt anders als Lynchs andere Filme absolut versöhnlich.

"Inland Empire" es, casi con toda probabilidad, la película de David Lynch más radical y personal del director norteamericano.Con reminiscencias de otros filmes anteriores del director, tales como: "Mulholland Drive" o "Lost Highway", estamos ante la obra cinematográfica definitiva de Lynch, en la cual hace uso de sus temas y obsesiones recurrentes sin límites.Este Blu-ray es la edición importada de UK (ASIN: B0039LAPWK); no contiene subtítulos (tan solo, en inglés, para ciertas escenas de la película donde se habla polaco).La imagen, en mi opinión, es muy buena aunque en ciertas páginas especializadas han criticado su calidad diciendo que no es superior a las ediciones existentes en DVD (argumentando que "Inland Empire" fue filmada en formato digital con resolución estándar). Personalmente, no he podido comprobar esta cuestión pues no dispongo de ninguna edición en DVD de la película para poder realizar la comparación.El sonido (inglés Pcm 2.0 ó DTS-HD MA 5.1) es, en su versión DTS-HD MA 5.1, excelente sin ser de referencia, haciendo un profuso uso del subwoofer a lo largo de todo el metraje y una excelente utilización de los altavoces frontales. El uso de los altavoces traseros es mínimo y en contadas ocasiones.Por lo tanto, siempre y cuando no te importe la carencia de subtítulos en inglés o español para realizar el visionado de la película, este Blu-ray es el medio ideal, por su calidad de audio y vídeo, para disfrutar de "Inland Empire".
