2010: The Year We Make Contact (BD) A new time, a new odyssey, a new chance to confront enigmas arising from the daring Jupiter mission of 2001. Crew members aboard the Leonov will rendezvous with the still-orbiting Discovery. And their fate will rest on the silicon shoulders of the computer they reawaken, HAL-9000. Based on Arthur C. Clarkes 2001: A Space Odyssey sequel, director Peter Hyams spellbinder nominated for 5 Academy Awards* stars Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, Oscar winner** Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban and Keir Dullea. ]]> Review: Good - Good old film. Was received with no issues Review: Solid, well-plotted and workmanlike - a serious bit of science fiction. - A solid, well-plotted and serious bit of science fiction that I actually prefer to the original 2001, whose grindlingly-slow pacing always tired me out despite its beauty and remarkably crisp and well-realised effects. 2010 lacks that majesty, but is workmanlike in its delivery, reasonably serious in its science, and friendly in its tone - all of which give for significant rewatch value.

A criminally underrated sequel that’s now one of my all-time favourites
I’ve loved 2010: The Year We Make Contact ever since I was 8 years old, curled up on the sofa with my mum, absolutely terrified by that jaw-dropping final act (no spoilers!). Over 30 years later it still gives me the same chills, sense of wonder, and nail-biting tension. In 2025 it’s actually ridiculous that this masterpiece isn’t on any major streaming service in the UK. So when I discovered my wife had never seen it (!!), I bit the bullet and bought the HD download here on Amazon. Worth every single penny. What makes 2010 so special: Roy Scheider is phenomenal as Heywood Floyd – more human and relatable than in the first film Helen Mirren, John Lithgow, Bob Balaban and the rest of the cast are perfect Peter Hyams’ direction is masterful: beautiful practical effects, gorgeous model work, and that claustrophobic, lived-in feel of the ships that still looks stunning today The score by David Shire is haunting and under-appreciated It dares to give answers to 2001’s mysteries while somehow keeping the awe and cosmic scale intact Yes, it’s more straightforward and story-driven than Kubrick’s 2001, but that’s exactly why I love it - it’s the warm, emotional, human counterpart to the cold enigma of the original. The last 20 minutes are pure cinematic magic; even knowing what’s coming, I was on the edge of my seat again. If you love thoughtful, grown-up sci-fi that respects your intelligence, looks fantastic in HD, and actually has characters you care about, stop hesitating. This deserves to be in every collection. An easy 5 stars and one of the best purchases I’ve made this year. Thank you Amazon for at least making the HD version available to buy - now please get it on Prime Video so everyone can discover this forgotten gem!

Not long now, or that wasn't that long ago.
This film is superior in everyway to the laughable 2001. The story is stronger and more believable and with a handy encapsulated condensing of the story from the first film handily abbreviated within the first 10 minutes introductory overview. There are a couple of things that made me cross though. First is the scene with the pet dolphins in Rob Shneider's house, an omen for his later role in Jaws. The child says that the Dolphins are fish, yet the mother chastises him and proceeds to lie to his face and say that they are not a fish. This fundamentally ruined the film for me as it made the rest of the science seem hokey and too far withdrawn from even theoretical physics. Also, the ship is a Russian vessel yet the tannoy is in Americanese. This is ridiculous. There is also speculation about ghosts - which do not exist - so the whole film comes apart within the first 30 minutes. The special effects are also shoddy, making Star Wars look photo real. On some of the bad space ship shots you can see strings and different colored outer masks where the films are blended. Also you can hear the flames in space which is impossible as it would be too far away plus the vacuum is on. On the whole this film lacks sparkle and imagination. The Russian accents are excellent too, sounding like a Ferrero Roche advert. Kubrick should have directed this one and not the first one. In summary, this is an excellent film let down by poor production and wonky camera work, amateur dialogue and eye popping special effects failures with dodgy science and a cheesey tongue in cheeks ending. Russians and Americans would not work together and the two suns is a straight up rip off of Star Trek and tatooing. Unenjoyable space pap, recommended.

Totally underrated movie - can't be compared to 2001 of course ... regardless, this movie presents it's own messages and the presentation is carried by an interesting combination of a more-than-capable ensemble cast. The disc is excellent quality and, after so many years, *this* is the correct widescreen ratio. Buy it. Enjoy it.

(Product arrived without any damage!) I love this movie! Despite the visuals and overall atmosphere being better in the first movie, I do find myself enjoying the story. And if you have seen it, you're now one of the few people that seem to remember that HAL 9000 was never the "evil AI" people remember him for!
