Bring your technical drawing skills to the next level
The media could not be loaded. If you want to bring your technical drawing skills to the next level, more specifically skills on rendering perspective, this is the book to get. This book is great for comic book artists and basically any illustrator that has to incorporate perspective in their drawing. The author Marcos Mateu-Mestre is a veteran designer and artist with more than 20 years of experience. He has worked for DreamWorks, does layout, storyboard, visual concept and development. In short, he's a professional of the highest level. Kudos to him for sharing his knowledge in this thick 228-page paperback. This book covers perspective in detail, way more detailed than any other instructional book on perspectives that I've seen. There's a lot of technical talk but always concise and easy to understand. The examples are easy to follow along, and his art is just fantastic.Just like Scott Robertson's books, I would consider this an essential book for comic artists, illustrators and concept artists.Volume 1 of Frame Perspective covers all the basics of perspective. Volume 2 covers shadows and characters.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

I also feel like the book would work better as a hardback which ...
Very informative and is taking me a long time to work through, authors explanations always clear and concise, doesn't hold your hand much though, often a topic is explained well, but it isn't always clear how to put what the author has explained in to practice yourself. The book doesn't contain "exercises" but has a lot of examples, personally I prefer to have a topic explained, then do some sort of exercise so that I gain the confidence that I understand the topic on my own. with this book, if you wanted to learn in that way, you will need to look at the examples and come up with your own exercise, perhaps based on the examples the author has done.I also feel like the book would work better as a hardback which stays open easily, or as a kindle book, but sadly there is neither option.this review probably reads negatively, but just to add context I've only been drawing and painting (and consciously trying to improve) in my free time for about a year. if you're more experienced you will probably get more out of this, if you're less experienced like me perhaps start with something else and work up to this. I've chosen not to lower the score just because of my own inexperience, but if you are a beginner definitely think before you buy.

Very well printed, laid out and informative - but newbs be warned
Highly technical yet explained in newb-friendly prose, this book is absolutely brilliant. It's told in a comic fashion itself, with plenty of high level examples that are easy to understand - but hard to master. This is *not* a book for people who find the later stages of art confrontational, this starts with the fundementals and doesn't let go.
