very useful
Really good book. Very pleased with it. solutions broken down in short easy sections. Not like other books where you have to read 20 pages to find the solution. Everyone should be able to solve their doggy problems with this book

great book
With the photographs and the down to earth instructions, this book is easy to grasp and put the lessons learned into practice. I have become more assertive and confident with my dogs. My granddaughter is more assertive too where she was very shy and weary of them which they took advantage of. The dogs need to know their place and this book definitely has taught me my place/role too!

Good but not applicable to my dog
This is a good book for novice dog owners...it is well written with easy to follow advice and good pictures. However, I bought it because it mentioned excessive barking, a problem I am experiencing with my new dog. I don't feel this book is useful for solving his problem as he is a very nervous/hypersensitive dog and the training aid this book generally recommends to curb most issues (including excessive barking) is training discs. These make a noise to startle the dog and interrupt the pattern of behaviour. However, under the glossary of training aids, there is a footnote that states that training discs can be used in all but the most sensitive of dogs. It does not give any recommendation of an alternative for said sensitive dogs, nor does the book offer much advice on training ultra-nervous/hypersensitive dogs outside...it just seems to be aimed at dogs that either bark in the house or bark through excitement or aggression, i.e slightly bolder dogs who would not cower and shake if noise aversion therapy (or even squirting them with water) was carried out. I can find nothing in there that tells me what to do when he barks outside, either in the garden at passers-by or out on a walk when we often encounter noisy people (mainly children) or other dogs. It doesn't help that for all three of these scenario's he is barking for different reasons. In the garden it is defensive/territorial behaviour, on a walk passed noisy people is fear-driven and towards other dogs it is excitement; he just wants to play. Possibly not the book for owners of a dog with such insecurities or issues, and more of a training guide for people with new puppies who want to avoid bad behaviour from the start, or just hone undesirable behaviour that is creeping in rather than that which is already well-established.

Outdated and dangerous!
Its a well presented book and may well appeal at first sight to the unsuspecting new pet owner. But beware, it contains a lot of outdated disproved nonsense. The dog in your sitting room is NOT a dog in wolfs clothing and the whole pack theory business is old hat and no longer viable. Better to read 100 silliest things people say about dogs by Alexandra Semyonova. That will clear up a lot of the nonsense presented in this book. The remedies that he has for so called dominant dogs can easily be wrongly applied by the lay person. I have no doubt that Colin Tennant gets results with his methods but many of them are not for the lay person and they disregard the real reasons for bad habits and bad behaviour instead relying on outdated theories.. I would most definately not recomend this book.
