Tanglefoot Tree Wound Pruning Sealer & Grafting Compound

This stuff is pretty amazing. First year using it and really impressed. I used for gnawed tree barks, pruned sections, and on some of my damaged squash vines where rodents chewed away at (but not severed!). Plan to try on squash again to see if it will repel borers. Will try to update with results of that experiment. It covers the wounds in a thick paste that dries pretty quickly. This pasted-on scab keeps valuable moisture in the plants' vascular systems and pests out. It will NOT prevent additional damage to the area, so re-apply if you see repeated visitations by rodents. Its purpose is to seal, not repel. Seek other methods for rodent and pest control. Read directions first before using. Trimming up damaged areas is important and will make spreading it easier but not smooth, nor aesthetically pleasing. You want to make self-healing for the plant as easy as possible, and trimming will give a neat and tight seal so the plant can begin repairing right away. You are supposed to stir before applying, but I only stir after sitting for long periods. You will notice a liquid start to build up and that's your sign it needs another incorporating mix. Freshly mixed, it goes on fairly easily. It's a bit of a hassle to 'spread around' as it's not smooth. You will get used to it, though. Use an old paintbrush and rinse out immediately after every job; not necessary between uses unless the build-up on bristles is impeding application. I've used it numerous times and it's really going a long way; about 1/4 to 1/3 of it gone across 2 trees over 8 months. It's a little slower to go on when cold but can apply in cold or heat. I store mine in an unheated shed. As the patches age, they will chip off as the bark expands, flaking away with no lasting effects on the tree and no visible traces other than the trees' own histories recorded in mended bark. Wonderful product. I also use their Tanglefoot insect barrier for one particularly ant-prone tree. High sun exposure will cause it to need more frequent applications, but a little goes so very far with that, too.

A great product, except for how gummed up the brush gets after initial use! I had pear trees with Fire Blight, had to do some radical tree surgery, and sealed up stumps of cut limbs with this 18 months ago. No follow up problems with blight or rot after all that time. I had 1/3 of product left, and when trying to use it up elsewhere ten months later, the brush on inside of lid was pretty gummed up. This is a sticky, gummy product, and I ended up putting on gloves to apply with fingers to use up the can the following year after more pruning. Probably best to wait till you have a lot of pruned stumps and use it all at once. Have since bought it again.

I live in a cabin on 24 acres of Juniper and Pine treed land. We have a pack rat problem, which is promoted by the Juniper trees providing ground cover for hiding and nest building. So, the solution was to trim all of the Juniper trees close to the cabin so as to deny them the nesting and hiding place. I ordered two 16 oz. cans of this Tanglefoot Tree Wound Pruning Sealer to protect the branches cut off at the base of the trees. This is the first time I've used this product and it is fantastic! I have around 20 trees I'm pruning and I ran out with around eight more trees to go. I just ordered two more cans to finish the project. I wish it came in a gallon size. What I especially like about the product is it is water based and can be thinned with water. But, don't think for a moment that its going to come off in the rain. It is tenacious stuff you don't want to get on any clothing because it isn't going to come out in the wash. Once dried it is impervious to water or moisture and provides a non-flaking and resilient seal to the pruned surface. Overall, this is an exceptional product. I will continue buying it and using it for all of my pruning needs.

I unfortunately had a squirrel (guessing, no confirmed visual, and I do not have deer in this area) go to town on my newly planted magnolia tree. Thankfully it was mostly just bark being chewed/scratched off, with only a small area of the trunk being chewed into. This product applied easily and seems to have provided an effective and substantial barrier layer to where the damage was done. I'm hopeful the protection this product provides will mitigate the damage done and not impact the growth of this sapling tree.

In the process of building our new home and getting ready to put down sod, the contractor hit one of my large pines with the big piece of equipment he was using to haul and spread top soil. I searched the local stores high and low looking for wound cover but because of covid 19, the stores were all out. I ordered this one from Amazon and it arrived in just days. The product is thick (as it should be) but goes on easily and smoothly when using a small brush. Within two hours we had a pretty substantial rainstorm come through and I thought I would have to retreat the scar but this product did its job and held on to the tree and the rain did no harm. I will order this product again.

I used this tree wound product a while back after pruning a few branches on my fruit trees. It applied easily and seemed to seal the cuts well at first. The consistency was thick enough to stay in place, and it dried fairly quickly. However, over time I didn’t notice a significant difference in healing compared to untreated areas. Some spots even cracked and needed reapplication. It might help in certain conditions, but I wouldn’t call it a must-have. Overall, it’s okay for light use, but I’d recommend doing a bit more research or trying other options if you’re dealing with larger wounds or more delicate trees.

The deer apparently like to eat weeping willow bark. One day the bark was there. The next I see about a two-foot wound where the deer have had their snack. The wound goes almost around the entire circumference of the tree. I consult our neighbor, a tree expert of sorts, and he says it is doomed. There is nothing to do. It will not survive another season. I should order another for spring planting. In a last-ditch effort not to have to replace the tree, I buy Tanglefoot Tree Wound Pruning Sealer from a traveling salesman pitching curative ointments and potions of all ilks for trees and people. It is expensive. I apply it generously to the tree and wrap it to protect it from any other bark lovers. The winter was cold and harsh and I am sure the tree is done for. However, the snow melts and the sun warms. I get up one day and see buds on the tree. Amazing. Maybe this is how a tree dies, trying to stay alive. The spring continues and more buds come out. The tree is in bud. There seems to be no weakness. This doesn't seem to be the death spiral I was thinking is going to happen. The tree is out. It is healthy. It is growing. There can only be one explanation as far as I'm concerned and that is Tanglefoot Tree Wound Pruning Sealer. It is an excellent and miraculous potion.

Just applied this to my tree yesterday, love the way it goes on so smoothly,and it will wash off your hands also this hardens when dry, great product hope this saves my little ornamental tree, which got damaged by an ice storm we just got last week

I had to cut a couple large limbs off a few trees and did not want to leave them exposed. This product worked great. Warm it in the sun, stir it up and apply. You will not be disappointed in the quality or how long it lasts. Five stars.
