The original design was created in 1946 by Finn Juhl for use in his own home in Charlottenlund, Netherlands. The home is now part of a museum and the Poet Sofa considered a work of modernism art. The frame of the poet sofa curves with artistic intent. Recapturing the organic curves and angles of the original is not a simple undertaking. The whimsical use of coordinating and contrasting fabric color combinations on the body, the seat and buttons, reiterates the artistic flair of the piece. Kardiel respectfully adheres to responsible standards when reproducing original designs. Details such as frame construction, dimensions overall and within, angles, seam finish, pleats, tufting, fabric selection. It is only with attention to material and visuals that substantial designs like the Finn Juhl Poet Sofa are reproduced without compromising your budget nor the integrity of the original. * Style: Poet 2 seat mid century modern wing sofa * Frame: Traditional solid wood frame * Seat Platform: Reinforced bottom seat cushion platform for firm longer lasting support * Foam Type: Multi density foam seat and back cushion wrapped in silk layer provides comfort and cushion structure memory * Seat Cushion Style: Removable seat cushion features rear zipper * Stitch Edge Type: Hand-sewn streamlined seams * Button Type: Double back row. The thread takes turns in an over and under weave forming a crooked yet overall lineal rectangle pattern that can be discerned at close range. The pattern exists but appears somewhat random when viewed from a normal distance. Vintage Tailored Twill features a finer, tightly tailored flat weave appearance. Vintage Tailored Twill provides perhaps a more refined, tailored appearance than that of a typical coarse twill. It relies on the multi-tone nature of the fabric strands themselves to provide the appearance of depth of texture. About the Original Designer Finn Juhl was born in Denmark in January of 1912, just before the outbreak of WWII. As a young boy, Finn Juhl did not wish to become a furniture design but rather had aspirations of becoming an art historian. His father, often described as having an authoritarian personality convinced Finn to become an architect instead. Finn studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1930-34. Finn began with cabinet designs of which were initially all limited in production to 80 or few individual units. Nearly all of these early cabinets would be reintroduced for production in later years. Finn Juhl's designs were a fresh take, complimenting modernism architecture and turning their backs on the traditionalist elements. Finn himself may have been ahead of his time. Many of his designs were not well received and he did not gain the notoriety of peers such as Hans Wegner and Borge Mogensen. Many of his designs were ahead of their time as well. One look at the Poet sofa and it is hard to believe it was produced in 1941. The Pelican chair received positive responses from the visionaries of the time but a significant portion were critical of the design. Finn Juhl passed in 1989. As time moves forward, more people are viewing his designs as a stroke of genius. Modern architecture is plentiful in cities around the world. While his designs were considered perhaps too cutting edge even for the newly forming modernist movement of his time, they express well today. His works are being re-introduced as masterpieces in varying reproduction qualities around the world.
