And it's awesome. Not nearly enough Mike Ploog art out there
Dream come true, right here. Been looking for someone to reprint Marvel's black and white Apes tales. And it's awesome. Not nearly enough Mike Ploog art out there, and this has plenty. Tom Sutton brings the same creepy edge to these tales that he did in his Warren work. And Trimpe gets to draw cyborg gorillas. What could be bad about this. I'm glad it's just the comics too, not the filler articles the magazines wasted our time with. Nothing interferes the flow of the story. One sort of negative thing, it's not 400 pages as listed. Closer to 370, which isn't bad, just not 400. That aside, as a comics fan and an Apes fan, this was well worth the wait and well worth the price. .

Fine Package, But Don't Buy This Book for It's Cover.
Despite the considerable storytelling chops of Doug Moench who had an iconic run on Batman, among other titles, and the altogether nice package created in this hardcover, with oits lushly painted covers, the comic book equivalent of another iconic SF juggernaut in another medium, such as "Star Trek: The Animated Series" epic move from live action Emmy-award winning TV in TOS's maiden voyage -- this is not. An item for the Apes completist? Sure - that audience it will satisfy, nor is it Archi Goodwin's "Star Wars, "and in its way, it did massage the muscles of those seeing the Apes landscape come to life once more (after its own TV series), but it never rises above that ... it never owns comics as a medium in the way of the Thomas / Buscema Tarzan (and Dynamite Entertainment, where is the art for that HC debuting in January 2018?) ... at best, it's a weaker Gold Key style run at Star Trek, sort of spectacle that may do in a pinch.

I regret purchasing this. Disappointing .
One, before this book arrived I found out that they're not planning on reprinting the POTA magazines in full , as was the case with other 1970s magazine HC "archives" That was a major disappointment : Even if some of the sections in the mags are not as fondly remembered (the movie adaptations and the non fiction segments) , without them these volumes aren't really archives..."collections", maybe? So if you have the original magazines, don't dump them just yet . I tried to keep an open mind , but after looking through this book, I discovered Rich Handley found it necessary in the 'afterward' to share with us his opinions on politics, and as is so typical, anyone who doesn't nod along with Rich Handley is automatically "uninformed". Puh-lease.Maybe someday the Marvel PotA magazines will truly get the archive treatment they deserve, in which the artwork is carefully restored (some of these pages look faded) and the contents reprinted in full. This is not it.

A DREAM COME TRUE!
I used to have many original Apes comics, but they were sold at a garage sale years ago. So when I found them once again on Kindle, my heart leaped with joy!

Great artwork from the 70’s
I enjoyed reading the series from the start. Back in the seventies it was once every three or four months. Nice to see how it progressed.

Oh, the Terror...
Happy to see this collection, but disappointed that the old articles from the magazine weren't included. Still, it's nice to have access to this classic material.

Good fun
Never read the original magazines, would've been cool to see some of the articles reprinted but as a comics collection there is little not to like. Mike Ploog is an excellent penciler and the B&W art really showcases it. The dialog writing can be a little cheesy but the pacing of the action and the adventure narrative make it all really good fun. Looking forward to volume 2!

It's a Madhouse! Comic Strip Apes Nostalgia Beautifully Restored
This review refers to Planet of the Apes Archive Vol. 1: Terror on the Planet of the Apes .For fans of the original Planet of the Apes Magazine from the 1970s we have here a glorious reprint of the bonkers "Terror on the Planet of the Apes" comic strip by Doug Moench and artists Mike Ploog, Tom Sutton and Herb Trimpe. I won't go into story details - you should discover, or rediscover, that for yourselves - so I will just say that the black-and-white artwork is some of the best comic illustration there has ever been and the stories are wild, wacky and enjoyable (think "original Marvel Star Wars").The book itself is a solid hardback sans dust jacket. The page size is the same as the original magazine (no shrinkage here!) and the art is printed on glossy paper. I don't know how far the restoration (if any) went into these strips but I haven't noticed anything to suggest there's been any over-tinkering. It all looks absolutely fantastic.Buy it. Read it. Enjoy some vintage apeage. Planet of the Apes Archive Vol. 1: Terror on the Planet of the Apes

For Apes fans and science fiction fans this is a must. The art is a highlight with incredible B&W illustrations and the story is a fun non-stop adventure with Apes, aliens, and mutants - I cant recommend it enough!I also appreciate the over-sized format and beautiful collection of painted covers at the back.
