Q: does it come apart for cleaning completely ? If not are there places difficult to clean where crud can grow bacteria if you miss it?

Yes, it comes completely apart. You use it by twisting the plunger inside the cup along a groove. When the plunger is completely inside the cup, the groove turns at the bottom to line up with a notch where it comes completely apart. I just put the two pieces in the dishwasher and it stays clean. The seams are pretty tight and I haven't had problems with it collecting debris.

Q: Since its plastic has anyone tried putting hot or boiling water in it? Has it cracked at all?

The primary material used is plastic. I would NOT use boiling water when needing an accurate liquid measurement. That is when you would use a glass measuring cup. I have used hot water from the tap in it and it is absolutely fine (simply because I hand-wash with hot soapy tap water). Hope that helps. Good luck. ;)
