No it's fairly stiff plastic - no odor at all

Did anyone else get a sore neck on the sides after using this? I used it for about ten minutes and the next day experienced soreness.

Yes, my neck was sore the first couple of time I used it but that goes away. Your neck is bending in a position it is not used to and stretching muscles that have not been used for a long time. Keep following the instructions and your neck will feel much better.
