I bought one of those, never got to use it, not because it wasn't any or couldn't fit. Just used an other design. Although there are no instructions, with a bit of thought it's not difficult to fit. Can't attach a diagram here, I'd draw a picture if I could. Good luck.

My loft hatch has a folded ladder on it. Will your catch take the weight?

Should be OK if you use two as I did. Obviously depends upon the weight. I don't have to support the ladder on the loft hatch, on the other hand I do have a large and heavy hatch.

would this hold open a garden gate?

I doubt it. A moderately gusting wind might cause unwanted release of the catch.
