A good read - even if you're not an engineer
What a great book! I've read a lot regarding aircraft and the Merlin engine but mostly in more general aviation books. I'm certainly no mechanical engineer and I suspect that if you are going to restore a Merlin you may need a bit more than this :-) but it was nevertheless fascinating to read about the technical details and development of the engine. All the people that I would expect to be mentioned are, likewise the aircraft types powered by the engine in its various forms. The author has also managed to include other sorts of information e.g. I was unaware that in the RR factories women were allowed to end their shift 3 minutes before the men so they could go home and make tea...! And I do agree with him - there is something about the sound of a Merlin that is special and can raise the hairs on your neck (in a good way) - it affects me like that even though I was born a few years after 1945. Overall a good read - even if you're not an engineer!

A treasure!
Anybody with a serious interest in the wonderful piece of engineering that is the Rolls Royce Merlin should not be without this book. It is comprehensive and refreshingly accurate in its content, relating to the history, manufacture and operation of the engine. The appendices are extremely informative. This is a book for dipping into. The author is to be congratulated!

Well written and easy to understand even if you do not possess a technical training or background. For anyone interested in technical subjects but particularly pre-war and wartime aero engine design. Read in conjunction with the Spitfire Owners Workshop Manual this manual will equip you to gain an in-depth knowledge of the inner workings maintenance and operation of both the Merlin and Spitfire.

Fun book and interesting enough
Fun book and interesting enough. But, some sections have a pop-out info box that repeated the main text, maddening. This I thought was a missed opportunity to print some high detail internal engine shots that would only be available in a book like this. Ok for general interest but nothing new to the table. Shame really.

Gives an understanding about the Merlin engine, but then repeats a lot of information readily available in many other places.

Not one of the best Haynes manual books I've bought
Not one of the best Haynes manual books I've bought. Some of the text was repeated from previous pages under sub-headings which looked like "additional" information but was a repeat of what I'd read in the previous chapter. OK but not brilliant.
